  2. Plan for the session Overview of content • Awareness of and management of physical status, chronic issues and medications • Updates for Optimizing Nutrition • Activity and Exercise Adjustments • Facilitating and Financing Health Care

  3. Physical Awareness and Awareness of Self • University faculty/staff are typical in physical status and health • There is more knowledge about us than there was 10 years ago. • The increasing extent of chronic problems. • Dual, triple and quadruple diagnoses

  4. Management of Chronic Problems • Examples are: • Diabetes • Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease • Cardiovascular problems • Muscular Skeletal Problems • Cancer • Mental Illness

  5. The Complexity of Multiple Medications- Polypharmacy • Prescriptions, Over the counter, Herbal Meds and others • Problems of access, handling, taking, forgetting, mixing, and monitoring • Side effects and contraindications • Preparing and updating a medication list for three others to have

  6. Making Sense of the Lives we Lead • Stress Management • Self Actualization • Spiritual Reconsideration • Life Review • End of Life Plans

  7. Depression-Loss and Loneliness: When is it dysfunctional grieving? • Necessary Losses- Feeling lost and lonely vs. clinical depression • Stigma and new knowledge of depression in the elderly • Treatments and cautions

  8. Nutrition: New studies every day • A valid definition: Nutrition is the relationship between humans and their food • Macro and micronutrient needs • Need for water and hydration

A New Healthy Eating Pyramid (Willett, 2001) White rice and bread, potatoes pasta,sweets Multiple vitamins, for most Red Meat, Butter Alcohol in moderation, Unless contraindicated Dairy or Calcium 1-2 times Fish, Poultry, Eggs- 0-2 times Nuts and legumes- 1-3 times Vegetables (lots) Fruits- 2-3 times a day Plant oils-olive, canola, soy, sunflower, peanut etc. Whole grain foods Daily Exercise and Weight Control

  10. Activity and Exercise- It’s all beneficial and healthy • The old cliché-Use or lose! • Benefits of activity are physical, mental and social • What are characteristics of healthy activity • Aeration • Enjoyment • Vigor and Rigor

Planning for Strength, Endurance and Flexibility • Why all three aspects? • How can we accommodate special needs? • Customizing activity plans to include all three aspects • Maintaining a good plan-cross training and ensuring social supports • How will we resume activity after illnesses or surgery?

  12. Negotiating the Maze of Health Care Decisions and Finance • The Impact of Medical Care in Human Health • The Changing Environment of Health Care • access to care • financing care • The need for assertiveness, advocacy and social support in 21st century health care
