  2. The Story • His voice calls to her, nurturing her extraordinary talents from the shadows of the opera house where innocent chorus girl Christine Daae makes her home. Only ballet mistress Madame Giry knows that Christine's mysterious "Angel of Music" is actually the Phantom), a disfigured musical genius who haunts the catacombs of the theatre, terrifying the ensemble of artists who live and work there. • When temperamental diva La Carlotta walks out in the middle of a dress rehearsal for the company's latest production, the theatre's eager new managers have no choice but to thrust Christine into the spotlight. • Her mesmerizing opening night performance captivates both the audience and the Phantom, who devotes himself to casting his protégé as the opera's next star. But he is not the only powerful man to be awed by the young soprano, as Christine soon finds herself courted by the theatre's wealthy patron, the Vicompte Raoul de Chagny • Though she is enthralled by her charismatic mentor, Christine is undeniably drawn to the dashing Raoul, enraging the Phantom and setting the stage for a dramatic crescendo in which soaring passions, fierce jealousies and obsessive love threaten to drive the fated lovers past the point of no return.

  3. The Author • The man on the right is Monsieur Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux. He was born in Paris, France on May 6, 1868 and grew up in St. Valery-en Caux, a coastal village where he developed a love for sailing, swimming and deep sea fishing. Gaston Leroux was a highly intelligent and very inquisitive child; while in school, he was drawn to literature and wrote many works, emulating Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo. Gaston Leroux's dream was to become a writer, but to please his father he studied law instead and received his degree in 1889. That same year, his father died and although Gaston Leroux inherited a sizable sum, he managed to spend it all in less than a year.

  4. The Music Composer • Andrew Lloyd Webber, Baron Lloyd-Webber (born 22 March 1948) is a highly successful English composer of musical theatre . • He was the most popular theatre composer of the late 20th century and is arguably the most popular theatre composer of all time, with multiple showpieces that have run for more than a decade both on Broadway and in the West End. 7. In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came ... that voice which calls to me and speaks my name ... And do I dream again? For now I find the Phantom of the Opera is there - inside my mind ... Sing once again with me our strange duet ... My power over you grows stronger yet ... And though you turn from me, to glance behind, the Phantom of the Opera is there - inside your mind ... Those who have seen your face draw back in fear ... I am the mask you wear ... It's me they hear ... Your/My spirit and my/your voice in one combined: the Phantom of the Opera is there - inside your/my mind ... He's there, the Phantom of the Opera ... Beware the Phantom of the Opera ... In all your fantasies, you always knew that man and mystery ... ... were both in you ... And in this labyrinth where night is blind, the Phantom of the Opera is there/here - inside your/my mind ... Sing, my Angel of Music! He's there the Phantom of the Opera ... 8. Night-time sharpens, heightens each sensation ... Darkness stirs and wakes imagination ... Silently the senses abandon thier defences ... Slowly, gently night unfurls its splendour ... Grasp it, sense it - tremulous and tender ... Turn your face away from the garish light of day, turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light - and listen to the music of the night ... Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams! Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before! Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar! And you'll live as you've never lived before ... Softly, deftly, music shall surround you ... Feel it, hear it, closing in around you ... Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind, in this darkness which you know you cannot fight - the darkness of the music of the night. Let your mind start a journey through a strange, new world! Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before! Let your soul Take you where you long to be! Only then can you belong to me ... Floating, falling, sweet intoxication! Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation! Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in to the power of the music that I write - the power of the music of the night ... You alone can make my song take flight - help me make the music of the night ... 10. Group comments Through this music project, we know that the Phantom of the Opera has been very famous since the first cast in London,1986. In this period, different performances were performed all around the world. Movies were even filmed. We compare the original cast and the new version cast, we find that the quality of the original performers are better than that of the new one. However, the appearance of the characters in new version are better. We think when we admire a music show or performance, if there are the old and new version, we can compare them and learn the good points from them. In conclusion, the Phantom of the Opera is really an amazing opera. We are glad to recommend it to all of you.
