  1. Truganini and BK A story adapted from Lester and Clyde by 1/2E

  2. Just north of Newcastle • near Salamander Bay • live two beautiful koalas • known as Truganini and BK • Their home is our school • So leafy and green • surrounded by trees • it’s a sight to be seen.

  3. These koalas are such beauties- their legs have sharp claws, they have spots on their bottoms, and white fur below their jaws. Their noses are black, their ears covered in fluff they look like cute teddies but they’re really quite tough.

  4. The school where they live • has a lovely big playground • kookaburra’s laugh in the trees • and lorikeets can be found. • The air is sweet-smelling • and perfectly clear. • It’s a place where all creatures • can live without fear.

  5. BK is the younger • and she’s full of fun- • she’s naughty, and cheeky, • a mischievous one. • Truganini is older • and likes Habitat 2 • with its beautiful Nicholis • and a tree with a view.

  6. One day when Truganini was asleep in the sun, young BK decided on having some fun. She bellowed her loudest in Truganini’s ear and she leapt sky high in an anguish of fear.

  7. This trick gave her such • an incredible fright, • that her fur turned dark brown • and her chest stayed quite white. • But keeping her temper, • in very tight rein, • she said very softly • “Don’t do that again.”

  8. A few minutes passed, • Truganini was no longer mad. • She climbed on a soft branch • and thought, “She’s just like her dad.” • The day was so hot • and the bird’s notes so sweet, • that soon she was dreaming • of the trees in her street.

  9.  But fun-loving BK • held up a sharp stick- • she was going to play • yet another trick! • She poked the stick into • Truganini being curious, • which woke her up sharply, • and then she was furious!

  10. Spluttering and spitting • and seething with rage, • Truganini pointed and shouted, • “I’ve now reached the stage • when I cannot, I will not, • put up with you near. • You’re a pest, you’re a menace, • you cannot live here!”

  11. They argued and bickered • and shouted all day, • till BK said quite sadly, • “Oh, have it your way!” • She told herself smugly, • that in a short while, • she’d find her own tree • where she’d live in her style.

  12. She set out in the dusk • and it soon became dark • so she climbed up a tall tree • near a caravan park. • Not a wink, not a blink, • did she sleep all that night, • for many strange sounds • kept her rigid with fright.

  13. She dozed in the morning • and then set out late. • It was wet, it was muddy- • a thing koalas hate. • Then she saw just ahead, • a Mahogany tree- • and wasting no time • she climbed it with glee.

  14. When she got to the top- • there are no words to tell- • her nostrils were filled • with a horrible smell. • What she thought was clean • bushland, • was covered in muck . • In panic she yelled, • “Someone help me, I’m stuck!”

  15. But after a struggle, • she crawled back down the tree, • where she sat quite appalled- • with her head on her knee. • In front of her lay • a swamp filled with rubbish • some introduced species, • and even dead fish .

  16. Very sadly she thought • as she trudged on her way, • of the tree where she’d lived • until just yesterday. • She pictured the playground • with leaves that she ate, • and remembered the Red Gum • just next to the gate.

  17. Later on in the day • BK stood on the slope • of bush filled with old cans, • an old piece of rope, • worn rubber tyres • and old loaves of bread. • Such gross human habits! • They made her see red.

  18. Disgusted and angry, • BK moved on with a push • and found yet some more • pollution-filled bush. • It was scattered with plastic, • newspaper and litter. • The human’s bone laziness • made BK feel bitter.

  19. How she ached to return • to Truganini and her tree, • The sights she had seen • made her want to flee. • She yearned for her playground • and sweet-smelling air- • and the voice of a koala, • like herself, who would care.

  20. BK turned in her tracks, • and she set off for home. • She’d been such a fool • and she’d felt so alone. • Oh! Never again • would she tease her good friend. • She felt so ashamed • and hoped their bond, she could mend.

  21. In the fork of a tree • that was home, old Trug sat. • She’d been mean to young BK • no doubt about that. • So she jumped with delight • when she heard BK say, • “I’m sorry ‘bout everything Trug. • Can I stay?”

  22. BK gazed at the playground • and gulped down the fresh air. • She told Trug that her journey • had been a nightmare. • She looked at the gum trees, • the birds and the bees. • she knew then contentment- • how simple things please.

  23. Then she asked Trug, “Why is it, • if koalas really care, • that people pollute places • and foul up clean air? • They say we’re just lazy • and don’t do a lot. • What do they know about koalas? • What a cheek they have got!

  24. Truganini shook her head sadly • at all she had heard. • “What a crime!” she bellowed loudly. • “It’s simply absurd! • But try not to worry, • ‘man’ can be such a fool, • at least we’ll be safe here • in Soldiers Point School.
