  1. Big as a Whale Algebra 2 Project 1st Quarter

  2. How Big is a Whale – Really? • How many students from our class would it take to hug a whale? • How many whales would fit inside our classroom at Stratford?

  3. Blue and Humpback Whales • The blue whale is the largest mammal to ever inhabit the earth • The longest recorded length is 108 ft • Estimated weight is approximately 150 – 200 metric tons

  4. Right and Gray and Orca Whales • Orcas are also known as killer whales

  5. CHALLENGE: How many students would it take to hug a blue whale? • Assume: • the average arm span of all the members of your class • a 108 ft long blue whale (one of the largest seen by man) • Write your estimate on a slip of paper • The closest estimate(s) will win a prize! (on Sept 7-8, the day that the project deliverables are turned in) Name Section Estimate: ________

Objectives (Making Math Real) • Use scientific notation to characterize the size and daily food consumption of different types of whales • Use properties of exponents to analyze quantities expressed in scientific notation • Solve real-world problems using mathematical ideas • Translate problems described in words into algebraic expressions, and solve • Compute the statistical meanof a sample of data • Create a scatter plot of data • Interpret a graph of real-world data to make decisions

Deliverables • Individual students: • Completed project worksheet (page 1 and 2) with all collected data, analysis, scatter plot, and predictions • Attach separate sheets of paper to show your calculations • Teams: • Poster showing 5 types of whales and a human drawn to scale The posters are the “dry runs” for creating a whale mural on a wall at Stratford.

Manage your time wisely • We will have approximately 30 minutes in each of 4 class periods to work on this project. • If you do not complete the deliverables during class, you must complete the work at home. • Deliverables MUST be turned in on Sept 7 and Sept 8. No extensions! • Projects count 20% of the course grade.
