How much edging should she buy? 8 ft Use known vertical lines to find a vertical measure… 16 ft 7 ft 20 ft When asked to find the perimeter of an irregular shape, use the existing sides to find missing sides, then problem solve.

When asked to find the area of an irregular shape, it is best to break the shape up into regular shapes (squares and rectangles), then problem solve. 16 ft Step 1 Break the shape into rectangles or squares 8 ft Step 2 Find the area of each part 20 ft Step 3 Add together to find total area 7 ft

  4. You may need to find area more than once to problem solve…. Example: The Rosenberg Parks department wants to lay new concrete on the surface of the swimming pool area shown below. The large area surrounding the pool is 50 yards long and 30 yards wide. The pool is a square with 10 yard sides. How many square yards of concrete will the Parks Department need to purchase?
