  1. There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, 28 and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died.

  2. 32 Afterward the woman also died. 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

  3. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.” Luke 20:27-38

  5. The Sadducees were attempting to trap Jesus. The Sadducees were devout Jews who studied the Torah. They believed that there was nothing in the Torah that indicated a resurrection.

  6. The Sadducees were attempting to trap Jesus. The Sadducees were devout Jews who studied the Torah. They believed that there was nothing in the Torah that indicated a resurrection. They attempt to confront Jesus with a conundrum that they think is going to disprove the idea of a resurrection.

  7. Jesus’ response tells us something about marriage and something about the resurrection.

  8. Marriage

  9. Marriage Jesus tells us that marriage will not exist in the age to come.

  10. Marriage Jesus tells us that marriage will not exist in the age to come. So how do we address the issue of marriage today.

  11. Marriage Marriage is ordained for this present age.

  12. Marriage Marriage is ordained for this present age. An important aspect of this is the procreative aspect.

  13. Marriage Marriage is ordained for this present age. An important aspect of this is the procreative aspect. Its purpose, while very high, is not the highest thing.

  14. Sexuality

  15. Sexuality Our society has elevated sexuality to a place in which it is the defining feature of humanity.

  16. Sexuality Our society has elevated sexuality to a place in which it is the defining feature of humanity. Repressed

  17. Sexuality Our society has elevated sexuality to a place in which it is the defining feature of humanity. Repressed We are the sum of our desires. For us to deny our desires is to deny our true selves. Thus we should express these desires.

  18. Jesus’ teaching about marriage.

  19. Jesus’ teaching about marriage. Marriage is God’s gift. It should be enjoyed as such. Yet it is not the source of human identity.

  20. What is the source of our identity?

  21. What is the source of our identity? Our identity comes from the fact that we have been adopted by God into his family.

  22. 34 And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

  23. 34 And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

  24. What is the source of our identity? Our identity comes from the fact that we have been adopted by God into his family. We are united with God through Jesus Christ.

  25. Resurrection

  26. Resurrection The resurrection is the acknowledgement of the reality of a relationship that exists.

  27. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.” Luke 20:37-38

  28. Resurrection The resurrection is the acknowledgement of the reality of a relationship that exists. Our identity comes not from our marital status or sexual orientation, but from the God that we worship.

  29. Marriage and Resurrection

  30. Marriage and Resurrection We should realize that marriage, while good, is not the ultimate good. Worshipping God is the ultimate good. Our marriages should promote and serve to promote the worship of God.

  31. Marriage and Resurrection We should realize that marriage, while good, is not the ultimate good. Worshipping God is the ultimate good. Our marriages should promote and serve to promote the worship of God. We should reach out with compassion to those who define themselves by their sexuality. Our goal should always be to bring them to a knowledge of the Lord.
