  2. Animal FARm(1954) • The first British feature length animated entertainment filmreleased in 1954. • Created by the Halas & BatchelorCompany. • Based on the 1945 novel by George Orwell.

  3. John Halas (1912 - 1995) • Born in Budapest, Hungary. • Studied painting. • Opened his own animation studio in 1932 in Hungary, but struggled for work.

  4. Joy Batchelor(1914 - 1991) • Born in Watford, England. • An experienced animator/illustrator, she began working with Halas in 1938 in Hungary. • She and Halas later married.

  7. Animal Farm • Based on the novel by the British writer George Orwell (1903-1950). • An allegory of the Russian Revolution told with animals published in 1945. It is strong critic of totalitarianism. • Released at a time of anxiety about the rise of Communism after the Second World War.

  8. Animal farm • Production took around three years. • Released theatrically in 1954. • Halas & Batchelor became the largest studio in Europe. • At the height of production 80 people worked on the film.

  11. The C.I.A provided $300,000 out of a cost of over $500,000towards the budget of the film.
