  3. Communism • Is a classless, stateless society, where decisions on what to produce and what policies to pursue are made in the best interests of the collective society with the interests of every member of society given equal weight in the practical decision-making process.

  4. Satire • In satire, vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement.

  5. Karl Marx- inventor of Communism- died 1883

  6. Vladimir Lenin- death in 1924

  7. Pravda- Russian “newspaper”- propoganda- the voice of Communism

  8. Nikolay Romanov II- assassinated 1918

  9. Leon Trotsky- died in 1918

  10. Joseph Stalin- died in 1953

  11. Sir Winston Churchill- Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

  14. Timeline of Events • 1912- Pravda first tells the dream of Marx’s Communism to Russian working class- in an underground sort of way. Trotsky is writer and editor. • 1917- Czar Nicholas II is overthrown early that year. • 1917- October Revolution solidifies the new regime of Communism. • 1923- Beginning of the struggle between Stalin and Trotsky.

Timeline cont… • 1924- Lenin dies and Stalin begins to really start corrupting the original ideals of Communism. • 1927- Stalin and his supporters oust Trotsky from Communist Party. • 1929- Trotsky is deported- later assassinated in Mexico. • 1932- Millions of Russians who would not work for Stalin and starved to death.

  16. Timeline cont… • 1933- The West recognizes Russia as USSR. • 1936- Trials of Stalin’s opponents. Basically, thinly veiled executions. • 1939- Non-Aggression Pact between Stalin and Hitler (Say What?) • 1941- Hitler invades Russia in a surprise attack- Russia then sides with UK and USA. • 1945- End of World War II- Hitler dead, and Stalin and West in “peace” which we know doesn’t last long- beginning of Cold War….
