  17. TO UNDERSTAND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, YOU NEED TO KNOW… The definition of development: the changes over the lifespan (from womb to tomb) in physical structure, thought, and behavior due to biology and experience.

  18. TO UNDERSTAND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, YOU NEED TO KNOW… The lifespan can be divided into developmental periods or stages, since changes in development typically occur in predictable patterns that are common to most individuals. Stages of the life cycle might include: pre-natal development, birth, and infancy; early childhood; childhood; adolescence; young adulthood; adulthood; middle age/empty nest; old age & death.

  19. TO UNDERSTAND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, YOU NEED TO KNOW… Whether the process of development is viewed as continuous or in stages throughout the lifespan, it is influenced by the interaction between: Biological factors – genetic, neurological, & physical conditions Environmental factors – specific situations that a person experiences Social context – influences from one’s family, society, and culture.

  20. A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO HUMAN DEVELOPMENT … Early humans found understanding and answers about the development of themselves and their children in custom, traditions, proverbs, myths, and folklore. Out of the mouths of babes come words of wisdom. Spare the rod and spoil the child. ‘Terrible twos’ is a characteristic of all young children. Sitting too close to the TV causes bad vision. Developmental psychologists today rely on data collected scientifically, through techniques and research that are objective and systematic.

  21. A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO HUMAN DEVELOPMENT … Some types of development are easily measured, such as height, weight, and age. We use rulers, scales, and periods of time to do this. Other types of development cannot be easily measured, such as maturity or personality. To measure these abstract types of development, we must collect and interpret data.

  22. A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO HUMAN DEVELOPMENT … How we collect data in 4 ways to measure abstract types of human development: Observation (two types)… 1. viewing the subject of interest in a laboratory setting; researchers can control the situation but the subject may be aware they are being observed and change their behavior 2. viewing the subject in a real-world setting; outside variables that might impact behavior cannot be controlled Case Studies… an in-depth analysis of a particular individual, but the results are often difficult to generalize to larger populations

  23. A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO HUMAN DEVELOPMENT … Questionnaires… they provide researchers with a quick, easy way to collect a great deal of information, but limits the variety, creativity, and individuality of responses. In some cases an interview might be used instead of a written document. Experimentation… this can be used when the researcher wants to measure the impact of variables. It is the most scientific, but ethical issues limit the use of this method. For example, it would be unethical to deliberately expose a child to abuse in order to study the effects of that abuse on development.

  24. A THEORETICAL APPROACH TO HUMAN DEVELOPMENT … Using the data collected by observation, case studies, questionnaires, and/or experimentation psychologists have developed theories about the way human beings develop. These theories are broad frameworks of understanding that include interrelated assumptions and principles that help organize data and lead to predictions and explanations. Theories are not ‘proof’, but since we can’t dissect the brain to observe thought and behavior… it’s what we can do.

  25. ETHICS IN HUMAN RESEARCH… While studies using humans may be necessary, researchers must observe moral and ethical limits: 1. Humans cannot be exposed to serious or lasting physical or psychological harm. 2. Participants in research must give ‘informed consent’ – a clear statement of procedures, risks, and obligations connected to the research 3. Researchers must respect the privacy and confidentiality of participants 4. All research participants have a right to be informed about research findings 5. Research participants have a right to benefit from the research at no charge
