  1. Food for Thought… • What are some attributes of God that you know are true? • How do you know they are true?

  2. Adam and Eve Disobeyed God Part 1

  3. Introduction • Today’s lesson… • One of the most critical events in all human history • Let’s take a quick peek at where we’ve been leading up to today’s lesson…

  4. Introduction • Where did God place Adam after creating him? • What two very important trees (among the others) did God place in the garden? • Which tree was Adam not to eat from? • What would happen if Adam ate from this tree?

  5. Introduction • What did God mean when he said that man would surely die? • Who did God create for Adam after placing Adam in the Garden? • Why did God create Eve?

  6. Life in the Garden • What was life like in the Garden with respect to Adam and Eve’s needs? • What was Garden life like with respect to work? • What was Garden life like in terms of Adam and Eve’s relationship with God?

  7. Life in the Garden GOD MAN Perfect Friendship And Fellowship

  8. Review on Spirit Beings • How did Satan come to be? • What does his name “Satan” mean? • When Adam and Eve were living in the Garden, where was Satan living? • What was Satan’s view towards man?

  9. Satan and His Tactics… • Read Genesis 3:1 • Satan disguised himself as a snake so he could DECEIVE Eve • Satan did not reveal who he really was to Eve - this was part of the deception • The more we study God’s Word, the more we’ll see how deceitful and wicked Satan really is!!

  10. Satan and His Tactics… • God’s Word says… • Satan is a liar and a murderer • What are his lies? • He tries to make good appear useless or evil • He tries to make evil appear good • He tries to infer that God is a liar and that God is trying to keep “good” from us

  11. Satan and His Tactics… • 2 Corinthians 11:14 • “…Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” • Tactic against Eve: deception by coming in the form of a crafty serpent • Eve had no need to be fearful of any animals…ALL WERE GOOD.

  12. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Does Satan exist today? • If so, how does he work? • Satan has not changed… he’s still trying to deceive and destroy people today!

  13. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Read Acts 5:3 • Satan fills our hearts with deception (speaks to our minds) • Recall…Satan doesn’t let you know that he is the one speaking. Often, we think those thoughts are our own thoughts. • Since Satan speaks to our minds, what is the importance of God’s Word?

  14. Why should I believe the Bible? Satan Still Deceives Today! • Note… • Satan can only be in one place at a time! • Many angels followed Satan in his rebellion. • These angels (now called demons) do his work on earth as they and Satan fight against God and humans. • These demons are most likely the ones speaking lies in our minds.

  15. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Read Matthew 16:22-23 • Sometimes Satan uses other people to speak lies to us • These people may be knowingly following Satan or just deceived like Eve

  16. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Satan tries to make following others look very attractive, even though their way may lead us to destruction.

  17. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Satan feeds us lies like… • “I’ll miss out on something if I don’t follow along.” • “If I don’t go along with this, even though I know it’s wrong, I might loose my ‘friends.’ ”

  18. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Satan will attack our own Pride! • “I am self-sufficient, independent, and I don’t need anyone!” • “I can be independent of God and do as I please because I am so intelligent and capable.” • “I am strong and have the will-power to withstand temptation.”

  19. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Satan tries to get us to take our eyes off of God any way he possibly can! • Basic lie for this… “The here and now is more important than eternity.”

  20. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Most people have no desire to follow obvious satanic worship & practices, but • Many people are becoming involved in more subtle things that actually have Satan as their focus

  21. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Where is Satan subtly at work?… • Anything that makes you look to a power other than God for answers to life • Anything that exalts or gives good, pleasant, or attractive feelings to anything that is, in reality, evil • Entertainment that exalts killing, lying, stealing, filthy language, immorality…

  22. Satan Still Deceives Today! • Where is Satan subtly at work?… • Anything that denies God’s existence or twists the meaning of God’s Word • Satan is the driving force behind all these things no matter how innocent or popular or harmless they may seem • The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials)

  23. Check for Understanding • How did Satan approach Eve to deceive her? • How does Satan work today to deceive people and keep them from God?

  24. Satan Tempted and Deceived Eve • Read Genesis 3:1 Again • Why do you think Satan asked Eve this question? • He was testing Eve so he could trick her. • He was attempting to cast doubt on what she knew and believed about God’s Word • It’s obvious from Satan’s question, that Genesis 2:16-17 applied to Adam and Eve!

  25. Satan Tempted and Deceived Eve • Read Genesis 3:2-3 • In light of Genesis 2:16-17, what do you think of Eve’s response to Satan? • Eve was already showing confusion between what God said what she said God said!

  26. Satan Tempted and Deceived Eve • Just like what God said to Adam also applied to Eve, what God has written down several thousand years ago still applies to us today! • His Word is timeless and written for everyone in the world!

  27. Satan Tempted and Deceived Eve • Read Genesis 3:4-5 • Satan was calling God a liar here! • God said, “you will surely die.” • Satan said, “you will not surely die.” • Satan was denying the truth!

  28. Satan Tempted and Deceived Eve • Recall Satan’s Rebellion… • He was overcome with Pride and wanted to take God’s place • He didn’t want to obey God anymore • He wanted to be independent from God and rule his own life.

  29. Satan Tempted and Deceived Eve • What was Satan trying to do with Eve? • He was trying to get Eve to believe that she didn’t need God anymore to tell her what was good and right and what was wrong. • Satan was trying to get Eve to rebel, to come out from under God’s rule, protection, love, and care.

  30. Satan Tempted and Deceived Eve • Bottom line for us… • God didn’t make people to live by their own ideas and thoughts. • God made people to be guided by His own Word. • It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks or says; what matters is what God says!

  31. Check for Understanding • What specific tactics does Satan use to deceive people? • How was Satan’s rebellion similar to what Satan was attempting with Eve? • Why is it not good for people to try to live by their own thoughts and ideas?

  32. Conclusion • Satan is alive and active today. He is still trying to deceive men so they will not look toward God. • Satan lies and twists the truth to get us off track. He appear to us as an angel of light. • If we do not know God’s truth, we can not know Satan’s lies! We would have no basis for comparison!

  33. Review • Questions 1 through 9 on handout.

  34. Next Week… • Drop kids off at the Covert’s around 5 PM. • Go to Tim and Tomi-Jo’s for hors d’ourves
