    1. Rise of Democracy Objective: Compare and Contrast Jeffersonian Democracy and Jacksonian Democracy. Essential Question Did Andrew Jackson increase Democracy in America? Consider: Social, Political and Economic aspects of Jacksonian Democracy

    3. Jefferson Background Grew up on a plantation in Virginia. Excellent education as a child by tutors Went to college and studied law at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. A shy person Known to greet White House visitors in his slippers. Only gave two public speeches in the White House

    4. Agrarian Republic Jefferson believed the country belonged to the Middle Class farmer. Believed in separation of church and state A deist, does not believe in the miracles of Christianity. No role for religion in government Believed in free public education. Believed that slavery was an evil but never freed his own slaves.

    5. Jackson Background Orphaned as a child A “self-made man” First westerner to reach the White House Fought in the Revolutionary War as a boy Most famous as a General during the War of 1812. Won victories against the Creek Indians Defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans. Pursued Seminole Indians into Spanish held Florida.

    6. Jacksonian Democracy Considered himself the “people’s president” Used the “spoil system” to appoint supporters to positions in government Strong role as president Use of veto to end Bank Charter Influence on Congress to end the Nullification Crisis Supported the system of slavery

    7. Jeffersonian Democracy vs. Jacksonian Democracy How do Jefferson’s Republican Party compare to Jackson’s Democrats Believed in a frugal, unintrusive government Opposed government spending and favoritism Government should not favor the rich

Assignment Using the biographies of Jefferson and Jackson and the textbook (chp 10, 11, & 13) complete the chart comparing (Part A of Handout 18) the political philosophies of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson. While working in your groups, see how their philosophies are similar and how they differ. Due 10 minutes before the end of the period. Homework – complete Part B of Lesson 18.
