  1. A.C.E. and its effect on student engagement and learning BER 540 Dr. R. Houser J. Mark Coleman Keith George

  2. Introduction • Alabama Learning Exchange • ALEX Certification of Excellence (A.C.E.) • Keith – Education Specialist (SDE) and Certified Trainer • Mark- Curriculum Development Team Leader and Certified Trainer

  3. A.C.E. Program • Train the Trainer Model • Uses latest research on Effective Professional Development • Teachers as Learners • Hands on, reflective, project based

  4. Purpose The purpose of the study is to verify that the A.C.E. modules, as designed, will be more effective in increasing student engagement and improve student learning as reported by the teacher than traditional technology professional development sessions.

  5. Hypothesis The statistical hypothesis of the study states that teachers that have attended an A.C.E. training session will report higher increases in student engagement and student learning than teachers that have attended traditional technology professional development.

  6. Method • The researchers have designed a survey instrument that asks teachers to respond to a series of questions related to the value of a school- or district-sponsored professional development session they have attended in the last 12 months. Based on the latest research, effective professional development involves teacher interaction, reflection, and hands on experience. (Teclehaimanot and Lamb, 2005) With this in mind, any professional development session that is reported to consist of more than 25% of “presenter talking” will be considered a “Traditional” professional development session. • Teachers will also be asked to respond to the same series of questions related to the value of an ALEX-sponsored professional development session they have attended in the last 12 months. Both series will focus on increased student engagement and improved student learning as a result of the trainings.

  7. Statistical Procedures and Analysis The resulting data will be analyzed to determine if there is a significant difference in the reported value of the two training models. The analysis will consist of a XXXXXXWhat Kind of TestXXXXXX at the a=0.05 confidence level. The difference will be determined for increasing student engagement as well as for improving student learning.
