  2. The Big Issue for the 21st Century? What is the next big trend in business? What will improve bottom line? What will circumstances force upon us? What is the strategy that will underpin successful organizations? What are all major corporations investing in? And the answer is …….
  3. Sustainability - What does it mean? Sustainability is ‘the capacity to endure’. The Brundtland Commission of the United Nations definition in 1987: “… development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.' How does this impact on business? How does it affect our Rotary?
  4. Does our Business/Home/Rotary observe Sustainability Principles? Do we use resources efficiently – gas, electricity, fuel, heating, air-con, waste products, labor? Do we use the most cost-effective processes, materials, business practices, energy, employees, home-working, transportation? Do we include Reduce, Re-use, Re-cycle, in our thought processes? Most organizations & homes could currently save 30% of utility costs

Climate impacts on Sustainability: Source: NASA GISS Nine of the 10 warmest years since 1880 have occurred since the year 2000, as the Earth has experienced sustained higher temperatures than in any decade during the 20th century. As greenhouse gas emissions and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels continue to rise, scientists expect the long-term temperature increase to continue as well.   14. Sustainability includes Population: Planet Earth is ~4.6 billion years old About 400,000 years ago our ancestors found that burning carbon fuel kept them warm Controlling temperature, creating light, clearing forests, cooking….. Using fire helped the population to grow

  16. Predictions of Drought by 2070 Two BILLION people rely on the glacial melt-water from the Himalayas and mountains in northern India, China and Pakistan The glaciers are melting Can we imagine the consequences if this life-giving water supply fails? Source: University of Kassel in Germany

TST Supports Clean Cooking Programin Liberia From this unhealthy situation To this, with Rotary help De-forestation is a major problem in parts of Africa Eg: Ghana’s deforestation rate is ~ 2.6% per annum This is a direct result of tree-felling for fuel At this rate, Ghana will lose its forest cover soon Indoor air pollution from cooking & heating is known to kill about 1.5m - 2m annually – mostly women & young children The problems are similar in Liberia Charity SJEDI has a clean cookstove project for Liberia TST has brought Liberia Rotary Clubs into play When funds are available, they will help with distributing and training for clean cookstoves Source: www.worstpolluted.org/projects_reports/display/69
