  1. Update: WRP Science Education Pathway Workgroup Paul Heimowitz, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2007Annual WRP Meeting

Background • Oregon schools using FOSS curricula acquire rusty crayfish, Brazilian elodea, and other ANS • Oregon Sea Grant leads outreach effort • Analysis of pathway identifies 4 main components: • - Biological supply houses • - Organism suppliers • - Science curricula developers • - Schools/teachers/students

  3. Background cont. • WRP holds session on pathway at 2006 meeting in order to: • - raise awareness • - share examples • - evaluate need for regional/national action • Work group established to develop recommendations

  4. Draft recommendations include… • Expand Habitattitude campaign to engage biological supply companies; jointly develop outreach materials • Outreach regarding current lists of prohibited species • HACCP plans/certification for organism suppliers • Protocols for humane euthanasia • List of viable repositories

  5. Next steps… • Draft recommendations for WRP consideration in late September • If warranted, forward recommendations to ANSTF • Proposal to National Sea Grant for outreach initiative
