  3. Current End of Life Education • MS1 Ethics of Clinical Medicine 1 Fall Semester- 2 Lectures Ethics- Dealt with end of life issues Complementary and Alternative Medicine- not focused on end of life care, but talked about comfort care: acupuncture, yoga, aromatherapy

  4. Current End of Life Education • MS1 (cont.) Spring Semester- Three lectures Medical care of the frail elderly Legal and ethical issues of Death Death and dying panel Small Group Discussion

  5. Current End of Life Education • MS2- It doesn’t get any better Ethics of Clinical Medicine 2- Three Lectures Ethics Communicating Bad News Complementary and Alternative Medicine

  6. Current End of Life Education • MS3 No specific curriculum for end of life care or palliative medicine

  7. Current End of Life Education • MS4 Palliative Care Elective- Four week rotation -Weekly lectures and meetings -Rounds at Downstate, VA Hospital in Brooklyn, and Calvary Hospital, the only fully accredited acute care hospital specializing in palliative medicine for cancer patients in the U.S.

The Wheels Are in Motion… • SUNY Downstate Medical Center is in the process of creating a palliative care consult team. • Dr. Ahronheim(my mentor) has been trying to get an elective or summer program started before I contacted her. • A class wide email I sent out yielded over 20 responses from people interested in a hands-on experience in end of life and palliative care.

  9. The Wheels Are in Motion… • The student curriculum committee as well as some faculty have been notified that most students feel that more time must be devoted to end of life issues. • Also, I have kept a daily journal that I plan on sharing with peers and faculty when I return to New York.

  10. The Game Plan • Fall MS2 elective/Spring MS1 elective -6 week elective -One meeting per week for 3 hours -5 to 6 students • Goals: • Gain clinical knowledge and experience in the many different aspects of End of Life and Palliative Medicine

  11. The Game Plan • Goals (cont.) -Practice Communication Skills -Students will be asked to complete a journal and participate in a writing workshop about their experiences with death to help reflect on the rotation.

  12. The Game Plan • Week 1 -Of Course, Food provided -3 Lectures: Intro to End of Life and Palliative Care, End of Life Ethical and Legal Issues: case studies Lecture on Pain Management and/or Communicating Bad News and Bereavement

  13. The Game Plan • Weeks 2 through 6 -Experiential Site Visits in different aspects of end of life care Sites: 1. Palliative Rounds at SUNY Downstate Medical Center with Dr. Porosnicu, Hospitalist

  14. The Game Plan • Sites (cont.) 2. Meeting with Ethics Consult Team at SUNY Downstate Medical Center 3. Rounds with Drs. Beal and Lours, VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, Brooklyn Campus 4. Rounds at Calvary Hospital, Brooklyn 5. Visits with VNS Hospice Doc

  15. The Game Plan • Wrap-up session -Pick one journal entry to share with group -Reflecting on Experiences with Death Writing Project -Watch To Live Until I Die -Dinner and Popcorn provided

In Conclusion • End of life care is one of the most important aspects of medicine, and yet Downstate as well as many other Medical Schools do not devote enough time and effort to thoroughly cover the subject. • My Project should give the students what they want: Hands on Experience with Caring for the Terminally Ill
