  1. Name Learning Objective We will add numbers with composing. CFU What are we going to do? Activate Prior Knowledge Add the numbers. 1. 9 + 6 2. 8 + 4 Make Connection Students, you already know how to add one-digit numbers. Sometimes, the sum of two one-digits number is two digits so we must compose a ten. Now, we will add numbers with composing.

  2. Concept Development • Addition (+) means to put together. • The sum is the answer to an addition problem. • To add, numbers are lined up by the place value of their digits. • Composing a number means moving a group of numbers to • the next higher place value. • Composingis needed when the sum is 10 or more in a place-value column1. Addition with Composing Mr. Reyes’ 3rd-grade class is collecting canned food to donate to the local homeless shelter. So far, the class has collected 438cans. Today, Mr. Reyes’ students brought in 154more cans. How many cans has the class collected? 5 6 2 2 4 3 5 6 2 2 4 3 + 3 9 8 + 3 5 1 + 3 9 1 + 3 9 8 4 3 8 438 + 154 = 1 + 1 5 4 5 9 2 Composing a Ten Mr. Reyes’ class collected 592 cans. CFU Which choice shows 562 + 398 lined up correctly? How do you know? A B Which addition problem needs composing? How do you know? A B Vocabulary 1 lined up and down (gesture)

  3. Skill Development/Guided Practice • Addition (+) means to put together. • Composing a number means moving a group of numbers to the next higher place value. • Composingis needed when the sum is 10 or more in a place-value column. Add numbers with composing. Read the problem and identify2 what is being added, if necessary. Line up the digits by place value, if necessary. Add the digit in each place value. Hint: Start from the ones place. Compose a number, if needed. Hint: Move a group of numbers to the next higher place value. Interpret3 the sum. “The sum of _______ and _______ is _______.” 1 2 3 a 4 4 1 7 4 5 6 + 2 6 8 + 3 2 5 How did I/you identify what is being added? How did I/you line up the digits by place value? How did I/you add each digit? How did I/you compose a number, if needed? CFU 2 find 3 explain Vocabulary 1 2 3 3a

  4. Skill Development/Guided Practice (continued) • Addition (+) means to put together. • Composing a number means moving a group of numbers to the next higher place value. • Composingis needed when the sum is 10 or more in a place-value column. Add numbers with composing. Read the problem and identify what is being added, if necessary. (underline) Line up the numbers by the place value of their digits, if necessary. Add the digit in each place value. Hint: Start from the ones place. Compose a number, if needed. Hint: Move a group of numbers to the next higher place value. Interpret the sum. 5. Skill Development/Guided Practice (continued) How did I/you determine what the question is asking? How did I/you determine the math concept required? How did I/you determine the relevant information? How did I/you solve and interpret the problem? How did I/you check the reasonableness of the answer? CFU 4 unit of land measure Vocabulary 1 2 3 4 5

  6. Relevance • Addition (+) means to put together. • Composing a number means moving a group of numbers to the next higher place value. • Composingis needed when the sum is 10 or more in a place-value column. 1 Adding numbers with composing will help you describe amounts. Jeremiah has 479 baseball cards. He was given a box of 150 more cards. How many baseball cards does he have now? 479 +150 629 2 Adding numbers with composing will help you do well on tests. Sample Test Question: 17. The small town of Fillmore has 489 grown-ups and 238 children. How many people live in Fillmore? A 727 B 617 C 717 D 627 Does anyone else have another reason why it is relevant to add numbers with composing? (Pair-Share) Why is it relevant to add numbers with composing? You may give me one of my reasons or one of your own. Which reason is more relevant to you? Why? CFU
