  1. Breckenridge Public Schools Safety Audit And Improvement’s

  2. Safety - Identification • Student Identification • Presently: No system • Recommended: Check with our student picture company to see if they can put something together. • Why: With the number of transient students it can be difficult to know who is supposed to be in the building and who is not • Staff Identification • Presently: No system • Recommended: Check with our picture company to see if they can put something together. • Why: Allows students to identify staff.

  3. Safety - Communication • Intercom: • Issue: Our intercom system doesn’t function in all areas of the building. • Solution: Test all classrooms and spaces that are used by staff and students and fix those areas that are out of order. • Add the intercom to the Weight Room area. This area is used throughout the day and has no communication with the rest of the school.

  4. Safety – Hallways • Staff Responsibilities: • Presently there is no set system for supervision of the hallways. • Solution: Define areas that each staff needs to be responsible for. • Consideration should be given to prep times and other duties that staff are responsible for. • What time in the morning and how long after school? • Lunch?

  5. Safety – Student Passes • Presently: Students have 4 pages of passes in their daily planner. This works out to be about 120 times out of class per year. • Recommendation: • Limit the number of passes. • Different system other than the planner. • Classroom sign out so staff have record.

  6. Safety - Communication • Chain of Command • Presently – The system is solid with regards to upper administration. • Weakness – When the principal is out of the building who is in charge. • Solution – All staff should know who to contact when the principal is out. A chart should be included in our crisis manual that tells staff who to contact.

  7. Handbook - Students • Dress Code • Weakness – All areas of our dress code policy are very grey in definition. This leaves staff members in a very awkward and inconsistent position when dealing with these isssues. • Solution – Clearly define areas of concern such as short length, skirt length, bra straps, etc. • Utilize other schools handbooks to find definitions that will work for our district.

  8. Safety - Outdoor • Parking Lots • Front – Good condition and well lit. • Back – Lighting must be improved. • This is where most of our students park who are in extra curricular activities. With them returning late on many occasions we need to improve their safety by improving the lighting. • Vehicle Identification • Student and Staff Vehicles • Stickers with ID’s would allow us to quickly identify vehicles if a situation arises.

  9. Safety - AED • Presently: • We have AED’s located in 2 locations in the High School and also have one that is mobile. • Improvements Needed: • We need to train all staff on using the AED’s including all game personnel. • We need to put an AED in our Football/Track Press Box. • We need to provide our athletic trainer with a portable AED device.

  10. Safety - Outdoors • Football / Track Complex • Improvements • Regular bleacher checks for safety. • Limit areas for people to be during contests which would take pressure off of our security staff. • Improve lighting in the areas behind the bleachers. • Improve the parking situation.

  11. Conclusion We are very strong in many areas with regards to our facilities and safety. With the commitment of our school board we can take care of all weakness and make our school a model of safety.
