  2. Think… Why are people religious? What purpose does religion serve? How has religion impacted society?

Functions of Religion • Reduces anxiety by explaining the unknown • Provides comfort by assuring supernatural aid • Provides notions on right and wrong; sets standards for acceptable behavior • Removes the burden of decision making from individuals to supernatural powers • Helps maintain social solidarity

  4. Polytheistic Religions • Belief in multiple gods, goddesses, or divine spirits. • Examples: Hinduism, animism, Wicca

  5. Hinduism • Sacred Texts – the Vedas • Creation God - Brahman • Ideas - reincarnation, karma, dharma, moksha (liberation) • 3,800 years old! • 950 million followers, 15% of the world
