What is a STELLAR lesson like?

1.Shared Reading Experiences

Children read storybook with the teacher and engage in oral discussions with teacher and peers

2. Shared Writing

3. Language Use Activities in Learning Centres

The teacher prepares mini lessons based on specific needs of children to prepare them for reading & writing activities; e.g. grammar, vocabulary, word recognition, decoding skills, spelling

The teacher models writing using children’s language. Children engage in writing together and in writing independently

Concepts about print: (i.e. spacing between words, reading from left to right, punctuation)

Key teaching points:

English language programmes
English Language Programmes:-

  • Learning Journeys

  • Kids Read Programme for selected Pri 1 & 2 pupils

    Target group : FAS pupils - gross monthly household income

    not exceeding $3500

    Frequency : once a week (before curriculum time)

    Conducted by : Parent Volunteers

  • S.E.E.D activities for experiential learning

  • English Language Fiesta (ELF @ Woodgrove)


English language programmes1
English Language Programmes:-

  • Support for pupils who are weak in the language through the following:-

    i) Learning Support Programme

    Target group : pupils who are below their reading age group.

    Frequency : Daily withdrawal during curriculum time, under

    guidance of Learning Support Coordinator

    Class size : Between 5 – 10 students

    Focus : Reading (Phonics and Recognition of sight

    words, sentence construction, vocabulary

    building)

  • Support for pupils who are weak in the language but not in the Learning Support Programme:-

    i) PromotingOurReadingTalent (PORT) &

    Advanced PromotingOurReadingTalent

    (PORT)

    Target group : PORT (20 – 30 marks) &

    Advanced PORT (30 – 40 marks)

    Duration : 45 minutes before Curriculum Time,

    Class size : 10 students

    Focus : 4 Language Skills, mainly on Reading

    Comprehension
