  2. Figurative language • Figurative language is a word or phrase that departs from everyday literal language for the sake of comparison, emphasis, clarity, or freshness.

  4. Simile • A simile uses the words “like” or “as” to compare one object or idea with another to suggest they are alike. • Example: she is as busy as a bee. • Write your own simile.

  5. I am hungry as a horse. You run like a rabbit. She is happy as a clam. He is sneaky as a snake.

  6. Metaphor • A figure of speech comparing two unlike without using like or as. • She is a work horse! • Write your own metaphor.

  7. The girl was a fish in the water. The clown was a feather floating away.

  8. Hyperbole • An exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally. • Example: I was so thirsty, I could have drank the ocean!

  9. Idiom • A natural manner of speaking to a native speaker of a language. • Its raining cats and dogs. • Write your own example
