Immigrants: took low paying jobs in factories which were also located in the cities African Americans: moved from the South to the North to improve their lives Farmers: because most of the land was divided into farms and ranches in the West, many Americans left farms to find a better life in the cities

    5. Where did people live? Where people lived depended upon: Ethnicity Wealth Poor Lived in crowded slums in the city center The streets were crowded and dirty Lived in tenements Diseases raged through out the tenements

    7. Middle Class Wealthy Lived outside of city slums Doctors, lawyers, managers Rows of neat houses Diseases did not spread as quickly as in the slums Lived on the outskirts of the city Lived in mansions Filled their mansions with priceless art and had lavish parties
