  1. Outboard Engines (not overboard engines…) with Conor Sweeney! .. And slides that look suspiciously like he nicked them from CFT…

  2. We Will Cover • Everything! • Console • Trimming • Fuel System • Outboard what? • Prop • Start, Stop • Spares • Strokes

  3. Console • Helm (Remote) Steering • Throttle / Gear Change • Tilt / Trim Switch • Cold Start / Neutral Throttle • Deadmans • Ignition Key • Other dials and lights and thingys…

  4. Trimming Trimming In (Down) *Lowers the bow *Results in quicker planing, especially with a heavy load *Improves ride in choppy water *Increases steering torque or pull to the right Neutral Trimming *Normally results in greater efficiency. (Note that the propeller shaft, which connects the propeller to the drive shaft, is parallel to the surface of the water.) Trimming Out (Up) *Lifts the bow *Increases top speed *Increases clearance in shallow waters *Increases steering torque or pull to the left

  5. Fuel System Engine tank Filler cap Fuel vent Underfloor tank Underseat tank Reserve tank • Unleaded Fuel • Oil / Fuel Mixing - Manual Mixing - Oil Injection

  6. Fuel tips • Carry reserve fuel for return from furthest point • Do a pre-launch check: fuel gauges often not accurate • 2 stroke outboards have high fuel consumption : • Estimate: 0.5 litre per horse power per hour • 100hp travels 2 mpg/0.8kmpl in ideal conditions • Drive economically: • Best fuel economy : just over planing speed • Planing at full throttle : uses twice as much fuel • Not planing : uses three or four times as much fuel

  7. Outboard bits and yolkies and thingymubobs… Cowl Tell-tale (open circuit) Fuel line Anti-cavitation plate Water pump Prop Water inlet Exhaust Skeg

  8. Dings, dangs, and Doh!s • Shafts • Propeller pitches • Shear pins • Splined hubs • Spare prop • Prop guards

  9. Walkin the prop • Walks right in forward gear • Walks leftin reverse gear • Heels to port!

  10. Starting the engine • Check from front 2 back • Console • Fuel • 2-stroke • In water! • Tell-tale Filter Steering rod Prime

  11. After the sea • Degrease and dry engine • WD40 • Rabbit ears • Run fuel dry • Fuel filter • Spark plugs? • No oxtail soup

  12. Spare Parts & Tools - Tools: plug spanner, screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable spanner, visegrips - Spark Plugs - WD40, insulating tape, jubilee clips - Prop & prop bits… - Pull Cord - Fuel Line, Bulb

  13. Different strokes • Look! No valves! • Cheap, light. • Power-2-weight • 2-stroke lubrication • Faster wear • Expensive oil • Less efficient • Pollution • Noise
