  2. About aboriginal people • Taiwanese aborigines were formerly distributed over much of the island's rugged central mountain range and were concentrated in villages along the alluvial plains. As of 2009, their total population is around 499,500 (approximately 2 percent of Taiwan's population). The bulk of contemporary Taiwanese aborigines live in the mountains and cities.

  3. About aboriginal people • A revival of ethnic pride is expressed in many ways by aborigines, including incorporating elements of their culture into commercially successful pop music. Efforts are underway in indigenous communities to revive traditional cultural practices and preserve their traditional languages. Several aboriginal tribes are becoming extensively involved in the tourism and ecotourism industries to achieve increased economic self-reliance from the state (Anderson 2000:283–90).

  19. 阿美族Amis tribe • they are the largest of all the Formosan aboriginal tribes. The Amis can be subdivided into five groups from north to south: the Nanshih, Hsiukuluan, Coastal, Peinan, and Hengchun groups. These Amis communities are mostly scattered on the plains, close to the sea and along river banks.

  20. 布農族Bunun tribe • Bunun traditional family residence is pretty large in size. Ceremonies are scheduled according to millet planting, weeding, and harvest. “Pasibutbut ”, which means “Praying for a Millet Harvest” is the most famous song, the wonderful eight-part harmony sung by the Bunun people during the weeding time. “Malahtangia” is considered the most important of the life ceremonial rituals for Bunun male’s passage into manhood.

  21. 雅美族(達悟族)Yami(Tao) tribe • The Yami live on Orchid Island, approximately 78 kilometers to the southeast of Taiwan. The Yami houses are mostly built on gentle slopes along the coast. There are now around 4,300 Yami living in seven villages. Orchid Island, a unique natural environment, has inspired the Yami to develop a calendar and lifestyle closely related to the ocean, influencing craft in architecture, shipbuilding, and daily utensils.

  22. 塞德克族Sediq tribe • The Sediq has a smaller and narrower distribution than the Atayal, mostly in Renai Township of Nantou County, with the Atayal to the north and the Bunun to the south. Similar to the Atayal and Taroko tribes, the Sediq once practiced facial tattooing, which represented outstanding weaving skills for women and outstanding courage for men.
