  5. Educationof Girls and Women Over 100 million children, 55% of which are girls, still do not have access to primary education. UNESCO 2009 Projectethiopia.com took the girls2women project to Dangla, near Bahar Dar, in the Amhara region.

  6. Goal • To teach all school girls in Ethiopia how to make their own pads which are: • re-usable • environmentally friendly • sustainable • One class at a time: By March 2011, 500 girls had been taught this skill & were using the product. Eilila Secondary School, Mekele 2011. The entire girl student body & their teachers attended the class.

  7. Supplies • Cloth • Sewing thread • Needles • Scissors • Straight pins • Snaps/small buttons • Measuring tape

  8. Materials • Outer Layer: Nylon/cotton • Inner Layers: Flannel, cotton, interlock, fleece or terry cloth • Some example sizes: • 10 in. x 2.8 in. • 9 in. x 3 in. • winged back pads for bed time use • 2.7432 Meters (3 yards) of material makes 8 pads

  9. Method • Top layer (next to your body): Fleece/cotton • Fleece remains dry because it allows liquids to pass through to the next layer • Bottom layer: Nylon • Nylon is relatively liquid proof • Heavy duty plastic can also be used • Cut material pieces to match pattern size & sew together.

  12. Alternative Pad Design: • 9 inches x 9 inches square • Material: • Toweling & cotton • 1 layer of each sewn together • The pad is folded in three • Provides 6 layers of protection (excluding the two layers of the holder) • Project Ethiopia introduced the program to the teachers and girls in Dangla in June • They supplied the cotton t-shirt material for the pads, the cotton for the holder, the elastic and button for the waist band • Girls and teachers did everything else: from cutting out the pattern and fabric to sewing the pieces together • They had instructions in Amharic from http://girls2women.org/, an organization that has done this in other parts of Ethiopia

  13. Pad Holder design • The pad holder is: • a winged design • 2 layers of toweling sewn together • To fit folded pad securely: • Sew a strip of material at each end • To hold pad in place: • Sew 1 inch band to each end of the holder • Fit folded pad under the band

  14. Completed Pad Holder Pad folded in 3 & secured by the band of material at each end of the holder WawaryPedrosSeconday School, Addis Ababa 2011

  15. Mix & Match Materials • Cotton pad holder: • Sew fastener or button & button hole • Outer side of underwear: • Fasten button or fastener to hold pad securely in place • Vary colors of materials • Darker colors show less stains • Lifetime of pads is more than 8 years

  16. Caring for the Pads • To remove the stains: • Immediately rinse pads in cold water • Or soak them in cold salted water overnight • After, the water is good for plants– the high iron content is good for them • To kill any bacteria: • Boil the pads in soapy water: 5 minutes • Bleach will remove stains on white pads but kills less germs than boiling • Remove from boiling water and rinse in cold water • Hang to dry in the sun • For privacy, cover pads with light towel Homemade sanitary pads (red items) drying in the sun, Addis Ababa 2011
