Girl Guides and Girl Scouts as Global Citizens Introduced at the 33rd World Conference in South Africa, 2008 • Generates awareness about the MDGs • Develops responsible global citizens • Fosters international thinking • Places girls at the centre of the solution to some of the most important issues of our times • Provides members with relevant skills and expertise in volunteering, community action and advocacy

  6. GAT: Advocacy definition Advocacy is influencing others to take decisions that improve our lives and the lives of others It always involves: • Educating • Speaking out • Taking action

Building on our advocacy successes 100 years of changing lives Official observer status at UN, over 2000 statements made over our 60 year partnership 30 UN Reps in 6 countries Building World Citizenship, OROR 17,000 Girl Guides and Girl Scouts stood up against poverty in Millennium Campaign event

  9. So how does this look in WAGGGS? Eight MDGs Three levels Four boxes

  10. Three levels WAGGGS will directly advocate on issues affecting girls and young women. WAGGGS will support MOs to advocate on issues affecting girls and young women and work with MOs to integrate advocacy into their national programmes. WAGGGS will support and provide opportunities to girls and young women to advocate on their own behalf.

How you can get involved • Mobilize your region to get involved in WAGGGS and our partners’ campaigns: • FAO and 1Billion Hungry campaign • UNIFEM’s Say No To Violence Against Women • WAGGGS Global Advocacy Campaign • Nominate representatives from your MO to become a member of the Global Advocacy Network or become an expert on one of the MDGs

  14. How WAGGGS can support you • Run training sessions – World Centres, WLDP Advocacy, National Boards • Develop educational material – badges, publications • Provide opportunities for youth delegates to speak out and take action at international advocacy events • Develop capacity building resources – toolkits, strategic partnership book • Produce advocacy resources – position statements • Develop campaigns members can participate in – Global Advocacy Campaign, 1Billion Hungry, Tck Tck Tck
