  1. Accepting Responsibility If a person dies in a lost condition, who is responsible?

  2. Is “responsibility” becoming extinct? Since the Garden of Eden, men and women have been blaming one another for just about everything imaginable- from toothpaste lids and toilet seat position to infidelity. Just about everyone seems to be able to blame just about anything on someone (or everyone) else. We seem to think that if we can shift the blame, or at least share it with someone else, we become less guilty if not exonerated all together.

  3. “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” • In Matt.26:25, Judas asks the question above from a position of extreme hypocrisy for he had already made the deal to betray Jesus, vv.14-16. • But when it comes to the matter of responsibility, we all need to ask, “Is it I…. • Failing to accept responsibility for my sins?” • Failing to accept responsibility for my family?” • Failing to accept responsibility for my church?” • Failing to accept responsibility for my friend or acquaintance dying in a lost condition?”

  4. “If a person dies in a lost condition, who is responsible?” Certainly not: God- He desires all to be saved, and has made all provisions necessary to accomplish that monumental task, 1Tim.4:2; John 3:16. Jesus Christ- He tasted death for everyone, and released us by giving His sinless life for our sinful ones, Heb.2:9-10; Rev.1:5-6. Holy Spirit- He, like the Father and the Son, has done His part to provide for our salvation, John 16:8-11; Rom.8:12-17. The Word- It has been provided to supply all knowledge, wisdom, and instruction when read and studied, 2Pet.1:3; 2Tim.3:16;Eph.3:3-5.

  5. “If a person dies in a lost condition, who is responsible?” It mightinclude: Family Members- They may have failed: to be the proper example; to fulfill familial responsibilities; to be as attentive/concerned with his/her spiritual condition, Eph.6:4;Titus 2:2-8;1Cor.7:14. Church Members- The local church family may, through hypocrisy or neglect, fail to “preach the word” or be a readable example, 2Tim.4:2; 2Cor.3:2. They may also fail to properly feed and care for a “babe in Christ” so that he/she spiritually starves to death. Christian Friends or Associates- They, though knowing both the truth and his/her peril, can be too busy to teach and/or encourage, or too concerned with offending, Eph.5:15-17; Col.4:5-6.

  6. “If a person dies in a lost condition, who is responsible?” But it surely isthe lost individual. Family members, church members, and Christian friends may share partial responsibility and will certainly be held accountable for their failures by God in judgment, but the primary responsibility belongs to the individual him/herself, Jas.1:13-16. Notice the words spoken to a lost soul in Luke 16:24-31. Even under the Old Law, personal accountability and responsibility was God’s way, Ezk.18:1-32. So too it is under the Law of Christ, 2Cor.5:10-11.

  7. Two Take-Home Points: Take responsibility for your own soul- blaming someone else for your failures won’t help now or in the day of judgment, Jude 20-21; and Do all that is within your power to be sure that you do not share in or contribute to the condemnation of others- by either neglect or improper example, Jude 22-23; 1Tim.5:22b.
