  1. Intel R&D and USC/ISI Presented by Yuanwei Lao Workplace Applications of Sensor Networks

  2. The Main Idea • To improve workplace productivity • Existing sensors in office environments • Thermometers, barometers, safety monitors • Isolated, for a single application + • Emerging sensor network technology • In ubiquitous, ad-hoc deployment • Dynamic user interaction

  3. The Main Achievements • Conference Room Scheduling : To assist workers to find nearby conference rooms. • Bi-directional information transmission • Sensing: Gather room status information, many-to-one • Actuation: Forward reservation information, one-to-many • Follow-Me Guidance : To give visitors step-by-step guidance in a building. • Nodes are deployed around doorway and hallway

  4. The Challenges • Power: Power outlet Vs Battery System design issue: hardware selection & protocol design • Specific Protocols: Multi-hop wireless routing • A simple version of Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector • Topology-aware protocol (logical topology) • More User Interaction • To guide multiple visitors at the same time in Follow-Me

  5. Fig. 4 Logic Topology Pictures Fig. 1 Mica2 Fig. 3 Nodes Deployment Fig. 2 Stargate

  6. Innovation • Use “deployment order approach” to configure the network in a logical topology in Follow-Me. • Nodes with some simple state machine • Manual deployment to teach nodes theirs logic neighbors • Explore existing infrastructure • To increase routing reliability by overlay routing. • To employ a PC-based touch screen in Follow-Me
