First Nations/Métis Advisory Council • We have representatives from 12 of 15 first Nations as well as three Metis locals • Two First Nations chose to be observers and six have nominated members to sit on the council • Tremendous legwork required • First Nation visits • Complex structure • Many stakeholders – different backgrounds

First Nations/Metis Advisory Council • PVSD will continue to invite all potential partners to participate in the work of the advisory council and be respectful of their choice whether or not to participate • The continuation or potential termination of the Advisory Council is contingent upon the impact of the work of the Advisory Council has on policies and practices in PVSD.

  6. First Nation/Metis Advisory Council • Our Vision Statement: SUCCESS FOR ALL CHILDREN THROUGH HOLISTIC LEARNING. • Our Mission Statement: TO SHARE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL CHILDREN’S SUCCESS THROUGH MENTORSHIP, LEADERSHIP, GUIDANCE AND LIFE-LONG LEARNING.

  7. First Nations/Metis Advisory Council • Work plan: PVSD prepared a work plan on behalf of this group and with their permission • Our plan is for this school year and is quite ambitious • Next years (2009-2010) plan will be developed together.

  9. First Nations/Metis Advisory Council • Tied to ATFSL The Advisory Council will be reviewing an Elders/Cultural advisor handbook recently created by PVSD Handbook not a new idea but is vital to create understanding and establishing and maintaining local contacts – increases relationships

  10. Observations of a FN/MAC member • Council is a good thing and has proven itself necessary • Advised to proceed cautiously • Committed to making things better • Like what PVSD has introduced • Strongly endorsed by Chief Michael Starr
