  5. Pharaohs In this section you will learn about some of the well known pharaohs of Ancient Egypt!

  6. Menes • Menes was the first recorded pharaoh. • His reign began around 3000 BC. • He was also known as King Hor-Aha. • He made Memphis the capital of Egypt. • He divided Egypt into upper and lower parts.

  7. Khufu • Khufu was responsible for the building of the largest pyramid at Giza. • He was known for his leadership in the military. • The only existing statue of Khufu is a mere 9 centimeters tall. • A “funeral boat” was found buried outside pyramid.

  8. Khafre • Khafre was the son of Khufu, and was the builder of the second pyramid. It was a few feet shorter than his father’s. He did this out of respect. • His sister was one of his four queens. • Legend says the head of the sphinx was is modeled after Khafre. • He is also known as Cheops.

  9. Menkaure • Menkaure was the son of Khafre, and he built the third and smallest pyramid. • He also married his sister. • He was known as a just and pious ruler. • He died before his pyramid was complete, and it was finished by his son Shepseskaf.

  14. Queen Hatshepsut • Hatshepsut earned the throne after her two brothers died. • Her nephew should have inherited the throne, but she thought he was too young to rule. • She took her role so seriously that she even wore male clothing and a false beard. • Her reign lasted for over 20 years.

  15. Ramses II • Ramses II tried to reclaim territory in West Africa. • He has more monuments built in his honor than any other pharaoh. • His most famous structure is called Abu Simbel. • He was buried in the Valley of the Kings, but his body was found elsewhere.

  20. Queen Nefertari • Queen Nefertari was well known for her personal beauty. • Her name means “Beautiful Companion.” • She married Ramses II at age 13. • Her tomb is known for its brilliant colors.

  21. King Tutankhamen • King Tut died at age 19 and was buried in the Valley of the Kings. • His tomb was discovered in November of 1922 by Howard Carter. • His sarcophagus was removed, but his mummy is still in the Valley of the Kings. • He began ruling at age nine. • He is known for the treasures found in his tomb.

  27. Tombs of the Pharaohs In this section, you will learn about the pharaoh’s tombs. You will learn where they are located and significant information about each one.

  28. The pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure were buried in the pyramids at Giza.

  29. Ramses II and King Tutankhamen were buried at the Valley of the Kings. It is on the west bank of the Nile River, and is located across from the city of Luxor.

  30. Hatshepsut also has a famous temple that was supposed to contain her remains. She thought it would be an obvious place to hide her body, so she ended up being laid to rest somewhere else. No one knows for sure where her body really is. Her temple is located in Deir-el Bahri.

  31. Queen Nefertari’s tomb is known for its beautiful colors. It was discovered in 1904 by an Italian arcaeologist. The tomb has been restored for tourists, and is a popular attraction.

  37. Hierarchical System In this section, you will learn about the hierarchy of life in Ancient Egypt.

  38. Ancient Egyptian Life Followed This Model:

  39. Pharaohs • Of course Pharaohs were at the top of the hierarchy. Royal women were next. Most pharaohs had more than one wife. They often married within their family to keep their royal bloodlines “pure.”

  40. High Priests • Followed by the royal women were high priests. Priests worked in the temples for three months of the year. They never left the temple during this time. They also worked as judges and teachers.

  41. Scribes • Scribes were next on the hierarchy. Scribes were the only people who could read and write. They were highly respected. They recorded important information, wrote letters, and kept accounts for the Egyptian army.

  42. Villagers • Villagers were people like tomb builders, farmers, and soldiers. They lived in small houses in towns with very narrow roads. They normally lived close to the tombs or farmland. They were at the bottom of the hierarchy.
