Verbal—stating the opposite of what is meant (Sarcasm is bitter verbal irony.)—Montresor says, “And I (drink) to your long life.” Dramatic—reader or audience knows something that a character doesn’t know—We know that Montresor is planning to kill Fortunato, but he doesn’t know that. * Name symbolism here is ironic—Fortunato is not fortunate, but instead quite unlucky!
