  1. Irony—contrast between appearance and reality Situational—event turns out different than expected—Fortunato expects wine, but he gets death. Verbal—stating the opposite of what is meant (Sarcasm is bitter verbal irony.)—Montresor says, “And I (drink) to your long life.” Dramatic—reader or audience knows something that a character doesn’t know—We know that Montresor is planning to kill Fortunato, but he doesn’t know that. * Name symbolism here is ironic—Fortunato is not fortunate, but instead quite unlucky!
