How do we know we have rights? • The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms April 17,1982. • Equality rights came into effect 3 years after the rest of the Charter, on April 17, 1985, to give governments time to bring their laws into line with section 15. • The Canadian Bill of Rights 1960. • BC Human Rights Code (BC 1996) • Canada ratified the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on March 11, 2010, • The Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by Canada with U.N. General Assembly (1990) • The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples adopted by UN in a vote of 143 in favour to 4 against:  Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United States &11 abstentions, • BC Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulation How do we know we have حقوق?

Sex discrimination (“sexism”) تبعیض جنسی • one of the most pervasive of social injustice • like racism, may involve every aspect of culture & society • reflected in people’s attitudes, many of them unconscious, which further that discrimination. • To deny one sex full enjoyment of human rights is in effect to imply that that sex is not fully human.

Making Family Decisions ساخت خانوادهتصمیم گیری • Brainstorm some important decisions a family has to make that affect all its members • Next to each decision, write whether it is made mainly by men, women or a combination • Discuss the differences in the kinds of decisions that males and females make in the family

Making Community Decisions • Brainstorm important decisions affecting the whole community that were made in the last few years • In small groups analyse one: • What are the gender implications of these decisions? • Do they have any particular impact on women & girls? • On men & boys? • Record the decision making body, what is the approx % of males & females • How might the decision be different if it were composed of an equal number of males & females?

  16. survey the books & other materials you encounter • Are male characters shown as humane, caring people, who can be helpful, who express their emotions, who are free of the fear that others might not think them “manly”? • Do the men and women respect each other as equals? • Do the men take an active part in parenting and housekeeping tasks? • Do the women take an active role outside the home and, if so, in other than traditionally female occupations or unpaid or poorly paid jobs? • Are there the same number of references to males and females? • Are female characters shown as brave decision-takers, physically capable, adventurous, creative and interested in a wide range of careers?
