  2. Starting Point • Brown v Board of Education, 1954 • Supreme court decision that stated segregated schools are unequal and must DESEGREGATE (overturns Plessy v Ferguson) • Also, included cases from Virginia!

  3. Little Rock Nine • A group of 9 African-American students that enrolled in Little Rock High School in 1957 (just 3 yrs after Brown decision) • Had to have national guard escort them to class

  4. Important People Thurgood Marshall – NAACP Legal Defense Team and First Black Supreme Court Justice Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Preacher, activist, and leader of non violent movement Malcolm X – public speaker that promoted Black Power and more violent protests Oliver Hill – NAACP legal defense team for Virginia

  5. Virginia’s Response • Massive Resistance • Closing schools, creating private academies • White flight from the school systems
