Your BEd/BA Options • Teaching levels • Middle Schooling strand • Develop specialist knowledge and skills required for teaching in the middle years of schooling (Year 6 to Year 9) • Qualified to teach across 3 different teaching areas in the middle years • Secondary Schooling strand • Focuses on teaching secondary students in Years 8 - 12 • Qualified to teach in 2 different` teaching areas to Year 12 level • Common course for 1st and 2nd year

  6. Your First Decisions What will I study in the BA part of my double degree that will help me to become a high quality teacher?

BA Majors, Minors and Electives • A major refers to 36 units of study (8 topics) in one area comprising 9 units (2 topics) of first level topics and 27 units (6 topics) of upper level topics • A minor refers to 22.5 units of study in another area comprising 5 topics • BA electives are used to broaden and build flexibility into study plans

  8. Linking BA studies and Teaching Areas • Recommended BA Majors and Minors give you the in-depth knowledge that you will require as a Middle or Secondary Schooling teacher • Recommended BA majors and minors have a clear links to school Teaching Areas

  10. Into The Future… • At the end of 1st year select one Teaching Area to become your BA Major • And another Teaching Area to become your BA minor • At end of 2nd year decide to continue in either Middle Schooling strand or Secondary Schooling strand

  11. Into The Future… • Middle Schooling strand • BA major will be a Middle Years Teaching Area 1 • BA minor will be a Middle Years Teaching Area 2 • Middle Years Teaching Area 3 will be completed by combining remaining 1st Arts topics with Arts electives taken in 3rd and 4th year

  12. Into The Future… • Secondary Schooling strand • BA major will be a Senior Years Teaching Area 1 • BA minor will be combined with Arts electives taken in 3rd and 4th year to become Senior Years Teaching Area 2

Lutheran Strand • Students undertaking the Lutheran Strand enrol in several units of study offered through Australian Lutheran College (ALC) • Students will seek eligibility and approval for enrolment from Strand Coordinator, Ruth Zimmermann at ruth.zimmermann@alc.edu.au • Students take their final practicum in a Lutheran school, supervised by ALC staff • Completion of the Lutheran Strand prepares you for teaching in Lutheran, state and private systems

Student Study Workload • Assumes a full-time load of 36 hours per week to include: • on-campus attendance for weekly lectures • on-campus attendance for workshops or tutorials • completion of assigned readings • completion of assignments • Assumes availability 5 days per week • Time-tables alter from semester to semester and year to year • Assumes full-time attendance in schools for 4 week block practicum in 3rd year and 6 week block practicum in final year • A few topics are held as intensives in semester breaks and some final year topics start earlier than the rest of the university

  26. Get Off to a Good Start • Orientation Week 21 – 25 February • Tuesday 22 February 9.00 am • Transition into First Year Education session • Followed by drop in counselling to check enrolments
