  1. Energy Efficiency – Global overview and UL Initiatives Gautam Brahmbhatt Head Technical (Verification Service) Underwriter Laboratories Date: March 12, 2012

  2. Agenda • Importance of Energy Efficiency • Global Overview Energy Demand Energy available growth Energy Efficiency Regulation • India overview • UL Initiatives in Energy Efficiency

  3. Importance of Energy efficiency

  4. Importance Of Energy Efficiency • Energy Efficiency is focus of concern globally and major benefits of implementing it are • Sound Economic Platform Reduce Impact on Environment

  5. Global Overview: Energy Demand • Increases in World population and Global standard of living combine to dramatically increase the amount of energy. World Population Growth • 1804: 1 billion • 1960: 3 billion • 1999: 6 billion • 2012: 7 billion Increase in Standard of Living Consumer Appliances & Electronics (Clothes Washers, Refrigerators, TVs, etc) • Automobiles • Larger Living Space • More Demand for Energy

  6. Global Overview: Energy Available for Growth • Fossil Fuels • Source of 80 - 90% of energy used today. • Proven reserves are being consumed in an • Issues: Release of carbon dioxide, environmental contamination. • Nuclear Energy • Source of about 14% of global electricity • Issues: Storage of spent fuel, potential for release into environment. • Renewable Energy (Solar , Wind , Hydro, Geothermal etc) • Continuing to develop • Issues: Expensive and limited.

  7. Energy Cycle Energy under normal conditions cannot be created or destroyed, simply transformed from one type of energy to another Energy Generation Efficiency 30 – 60% Conserve Energy by implementing Energy Efficiency T&D Losses : 10 – 15% T&D Losses : 10 – 15%

  8. Energy Efficiency Regulations • Increases in Global energy demand have resulted in increased regulations of the consumption of energy especially in household usage. • Refrigerators and Freezers are globally the most regulated household product for energy efficiency: Survey of 20 regulated markets found all 20 had regulations. Air-conditioners (19) were second, clothes washers (16) and water heaters (13) rounded out the top 4 spots. • The global trend for energy efficiency programs tending to start as a voluntary label and evolves through a mandatory label to a voluntary self-declared program evolving into a mandatory self-declared program, and then becoming a mandatory third-party program.

  9. Examples of Energy Labels & Regulations BEE , India India Australia Malaysia California Energy Commission CEC Hong Kong Singapore Thailand Energy Star, EPA USA Dept of Energy Natural Resources Canada

  10. India Star labeling Program

  11. Evolving Role of Labs in S&L Programs • BEE recognizes Certification Body Labs • Manufacturer approaches CB • Drive New technologies • Promote Innovation towards better products Lean & Speedy • Market surveillance data to move the market upwards • Check compliance mechanism efficacy • CB issues CoC to Mfrs. • BEE awards label on CoC • CB conducts testing for Continued compliance

  12. UL Initiative in Energy Efficiency : • UL can provide testing for BEE, ENERGY STAR, NRCan, CEC , DOE as well as other markets. • We have a global footprint of laboratories involved in energy efficiency testing. • Our laboratories are BEE / DoE recognized for most product categories currently published on the ENERGY STAR website. • Manesar and Bangalore, India • Northbrook, San Jose , Plano … USA • Suzhou, Guangzhou… China • Tokyo, Japan • Taipei, Taiwan
