  2. Major Characters Jeannette Walls- Main character, middle sister, independent, hardworking, writer of memoir. Rex Walls- Father, alcoholic, biggest supporter is Jeannette, family looses belief in him, steals money for New York. Mary Walls- Mother, free spirit, artist, self proclaimed “excitement addict”, sweet tooth causes children to go hungry, owns land but refuses to sell it even though it will solve money issues, teaches when absolutely desperate.

  3. Main Characters Contined Lori- oldest child, “the smart one”, artistic, closest with mom, moved to New York, protective of younger siblings. Brian- closest to Jeannette, “the brave one”, adventurous, protective of sisters, police officer when older, divorced with a child. Maureen- youngest of the family, “the pretty one”, diagnosed with schizophrenia stabs mom, moves to California after release from prison, cut off ties with family.

  4. Key Themes During difficult times, having people who can relate to you can give you support. Overcoming obstacles can help you build a better life. You need to put your own needs above others unrealistic goals.

  5. What role does facing obstacles have in shaping an individual’s identity? Your relationships with others are greatly impacted by communal struggles. Facing difficult obstacles can push you to strive for success. Not dealing with your problems could make your situation worse and lead to further issues.
