Quick History SEWS QEP • 1992-95: SEWS created by a disciplinarily diverse committee after earlier attempt to create a WAC program • Late 90’s-2002: Assessed by Gen Studies committee in SACS-approved report • 2002: GS committee dissolved • 2005-06: Gen Ed committee given oversight of SEWS assessment • 2006: Recommendations for revision of program • 2011-12: Integrated with QEP in information literacy • Oct. 2006: SACS SACS Leadership Team asked LMU to settle on a QEP topic • Fall 2007:The Information Literacy topic was affirmed by faculty • Fall 2009: Year One of integration begins (ENGL 110 & JFWA) • Fall 2010: Year Two (ENGL 210 & NURS 115) • Fall 2011: All junior SEWS classes • Fall 2012: All senior SEWS classes & masters-level graduate programs

Recommendations for SEWS Revisions* • General Content and Format Guidelines for SEWS Papers (including information literacy requirements) • Submissions and Archival Processes • Effective Advising • Writing Assessment Process • Faculty Development • Program Assessment • Student Support Services (possibly a writing center) • Capstone Experiences

The SEWS Paper is to be … • a research paper, presentation, or project • Source-based • Display familiarity with disciplinary literature • written with the citation style elected by the major program • APA, MLA, Chicago, etc. • submitted to www.turnitin.com • graded with the new SEWS rubric* • 5 fields  basic writing criteria • 5 fields  information literacy criteria • Electronic rubric is on the CTLE *The rubric must be completed and submitted but it is not the sole basis of the paper grade

The Submissions Process Electronic copies of passing papers are to be … • Submitted by the student, to the instructor, as a Word file, using the designated file-naming format (see next page) • submitted by faculty to the program director before the day grades are due • archived by the program director for assessment purposes • forwarded from the program director to the SEWS director by email the day grades are due • Electronically archived by the SEWS director and on SharePoint

The QEP – Junior SEWS Integration • Librarian Integration • Required Assignment: “Annotated Bibliography” • Terminology may differ by discipline • Main idea is a list of sources drawn from disciplinary literature to be used in support of the paper/project • Submit all SEWS papers to turnitin.com

  8. The Librarian • 1.5 Face-to-Face Sessions* • A librarian intro • A search tools demonstration • Up to 3 total F2F sessions may be scheduled if you choose. ** • Electronic Resources. *** • Blackboard • LibGuides • Referrals  Librarian consultations

The Research Process – Search & Cite (Point & Shoot)? • “Annotated Bibliography”* • Helps students to take paper-writing process in steps • Pushes students to evaluate and contextualize sources • Provides practice with citation style • Gives chance for feedback before final paper is due • Could be scored by librarian OR instructor using a rubric tailored to class need.
