  1. COOPERATIVE EDUCATION Frequently Asked Questions How will we track your hours? Hours will be tracked on a time or log sheet. It is imperative that we maintain accurate records of your experience. Time sheets should be submitted each Monday. Remember one of the factors that determines your success in Coop is the hours you accumulate in a semester.

  2. Frequently Asked Questions What do I do if I am ill and cannot attend my placement? You are required to notify your employer and your Coop teacher. You should call your employer at least thirty minutes prior to your shift starting. You must call the Coop department at (905) 358-5753 ext. 60073. You will then need to record your absence on your time sheet.

  3. Frequently Asked Questions Do I have to go to my placement on a PD day? Yes, you are expected to attend your placement if it is a PD day (1/2 or full). Business continues to operate even on PD days. It is a great opportunity to make up additional hours.

  4. Frequently Asked Questions Do I have to go to my placement on statutory holiday? No, you are not expected to attend your Coop over breaks such as Easter, Christmas and March Break. Some students will choose to attend their placement during these periods of time because it is an opportunity to gain additional hours and experiences.

  5. Frequently Asked Questions Am I protected if I am injured on the job? In most cases you will be covered if you are injured on the job. You will complete a Work Education Agreement which will protect you while you are on the job. The coverage only begins when the document is signed. The exception is if you are in an educational setting it is suggested you purchase the additional insurance available through the school board.

  6. Frequently Asked Questions What do I do if I have an accident at work? By law it accidents must be reported immediately to your Coop supervisor. The school must be notified within 24 hours so that the appropriate paper work may be completed. Again the school number is (905) 358-5753 ext. 60073. If nobody answers, call the school and speak to somebody in the main office. If you are injured during a school break or after hours you will contact the DSBN Disability Management Coordinator at (905) 641-1550 ext. 54262.

  7. Frequently Asked Questions What do I do if I am going to work additional hours or days at my placement? You need to speak to your Coop teacher if there are any changes to the shifts or days of the week you are scheduled to work. These changes need to be approved by your teacher and the appropriate paper work needs to be completed.

  8. Frequently Asked Questions What happens if I am fired from my placement? There are many different scenarios that can lead to firing so this issue will be handled case by case. Generally, students will then be required to get their own placement. If you are fired you may not receive any credits. You should speak with your teacher right away if you are let go.

  9. Frequently Asked Questions Can I drive my own car to my placement? The DSBN advises against using your own vehicle for transportation. You should not be using your own vehicle for Coop business or vehicles at your placement. If you are driving a company vehicle at the placement it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure you have the additional insurance to cover you if an accident were to occur.
