  1. Time Zones

  2. Time Zones • Using the sun as the basis for measuring time, 12:00 noon is defined as the time when the sun is highest in the sky. • This is called Solar Noon • the sun appears highest over different locations at different times

  3. Time zones con’t • Assume sun is over head at noon in NY • Philadelphia, a short distance away- the sun would appear highest a few minutes later • Baltimore, a short distance away - the sun would appear highest a few minutes later • Each community would have a Different Timeeven though they are not far apart.

  4. Time zones con’t • In each zone, noon is at a set time when the sun is at the highest • If there are 24 time zones and the earth completes 360 o each day, how many degrees are covered by each time zone? Show your work. • Each time zone covers 15degrees called time meridian.

  5. Tme Zones • The starting point is called the Prime Meridian. It passes through Greenwich, England • Which is 0oLongitude. The International date line is at 180olongitude. • The time in each zone is 1 hour earlier than the time in the zone to its East.

  6. If it is 6 am in NY what is the time in Phoenix?

  7. US Time Zones • Eastern = 75oW longitude • Central = 90oW longitude • Mountain = 105o W longitude • Pacific 120o W longitude • Alaska time zone 150 o W longitude • Hawaii = Aleutian time zone 165 o W longitude

  8. International Date line • The IDL does not pass through islands or continents. Why do you think that is? • Cross the line from the east to the west and a day is added. • Cross from west to the east and a day is subtracted. • ex. If Thursday on the east side of the date line then it is Friday to the west of the International date line.

  9. Daylight Saving time • The time is advancedby one hour • Adds an hour of daylight to the part of the day when most people are awake. • Occurs on the 2nd Sunday of March

  10. Standard time- is resumed on the 1st Sunday of Novemberby moving the clocks back one hour • Are we currently on Daylight Saving time or Standard time? • Standard • Equatorial regions do not observe Daylight Saving Time…why? • These regions have about the same amount of light all year
