  1. AIR TEMPERATURE IN SUBWAY STATIONS Benjamin Bernays Christopher Lomenzo Daniel Sade

  2. Presentation Outline • Overview of Project • Developing Model • Model Results • Final Solutions • Why We Chose This Topic

  3. Project Overview • Client: • Mass Transit Authority of New York • Problem: • Overheating in certain stations • Plan of Action: • Model existing system • Model system with potential solutions • Compare cost, efficiency, and time table of solutions • Recommended solutions

  4. Model Overview • Written in MATLAB • Based on data available from MTA and train manufacturers • Temperature as a function of time • Sources of heat: • Train brakes • Train AC units • Heat sinks • Ventilation from tunnel

  5. Challenges Hard to get Train Specifications Unknown Station Variables Technical Specifications are Confidential Had to research and make educated assumptions/ estimates. Material insulating underground station is unknown. Specifications for station volume were not available.

  6. Why choose IRT Wall Street Station? • Location • Layout • Schedule • Available data • History

  7. Input Variables

  8. Model Output: Weekday

  9. Modeling Solutions

  10. Proposed Solution: More efficient regenerative braking 10% Temp Range: 16-35 °C Control Temp Range: 16-37 °C 20% Temp Range: 16-33 °C 30% Temp Range: 16-31 °C

  11. Proposed Solution:Separating Platform from Tracks 25% Temp Range: 16-34 °C Control Temp Range: 16-36 °C 50% Temp Range: 16-30 °C 75% Temp Range: 16-27 °C

  12. Proposed Solution:Increasing station ventilation Control Temp Range: 16-31 °C 100% Temp Range: 16-27 °C 150% Temp Range: 16-24 °C 500% Temp Range: 16-21.5 °C

  13. Summary of Results
