  2. Question • Coca Cola burns throat when first opened • Doesn’t seem to burn throat when flat • Is the acidity from the carbonic acid what causes the burning sensation in the throat when ingested?

  3. Purpose • Determine if acidity drastically decreases in Coca Cola over time.

  5. Hypothesis • While there are many acids in Coca Cola the decomposition of carbonic acid raises the pH to near neutral levels (pH 7).

  6. Materials • Water (300 mL) • Coca Cola (300mL) • Litmus paper (for pH testing) • Glass cups

  7. Procedure • Label cups water 1-3 and Coca Cola 1-3 (water will serve as control) • Pour 100mL of water into each water cup and 100mL of Coca Cola into each Coca Cola cup • Measure and record pH of each cup every 8 hours for two days

  11. Conclusion • While the acidity levels did change significantly (I hope) upon further research I found other drinks to be at or below the pH of Coca Cola which do not burn your throat. It is most likely the carbonic acid itself which gives the burning sensation.

  12. Changes • Sprite instead of Coca Cola • Use actual litmus paper • Use distilled water instead of tap water as control
