Monday, September 17 th. Entry Task All foods contain stored chemical energy, but some foods contain more chemical energy than others. People need this chemical energy for all of their activities. The amount of chemical energy stored in foods can be measured by burning the foods.

  1. Monday, September 17th • Entry Task • All foods contain stored chemical energy, but some foods contain more chemical energy than others. People need this chemical energy for all of their activities. The amount of chemical energy stored in foods can be measured by burning the foods. • Explain in terms of energy conversion how you can possibly measure food energy by burning the food. • Schedule: • Conservation of Energy Pre-lab • Objective: • I can design an experiment that will investigate the amount of energy stored in different types of food. • Homework: • Prepare for lab by reading pages 84-85 in book • Be ready for Mrs. G. to ADD homework at end of period • Please have on your desk: • Energy Comic Strip

  3. Question/Problem Statement • How much energy is stored in different types of food?

  4. Background Information • Use information in your textbook and information from the article to write a paragraph of information someone should know before doing the lab • Use the question/problem statement as a guide

  5. Hypothesis: • Predict which type of food (general category) contains a greater amount of chemical energy. • Write your hypothesis in the form of an “If…, then…, because…” statement.

Tuesday, September 18th • Entry Task • Share your background information paragraph with your partner. • List one strength your partner had in their paragraph • List one weakness your partner had in their paragraph • Look at the general grading rubric that was passed out in the beginning of the year to give your partner a grade (0-6). Be honest • Schedule: • Conservation of Energy Pre-lab • Objective: • I can design an experiment that will investigate the amount of energy stored in different types of food. • Homework: • Everything THROUGH creating a data table must be done by tomorrow. Please understand the procedure, step by step so you can safely do the experiment tomorrow

  7. Hypothesis • If a food is high in (sugar, fat, carbohydrates), then it will burn hotter, because it has more energy which is converted from chemical (calories) to thermal (heat)

  8. Materials: • Using page 84 in your text, record the materials that you will be using in the lab.

  9. Procedure • Using pages 84-85 in your textbook, record the procedure you will follow in the lab.

  10. IdentifyVariables • Review the procedure. Identify and record: • Manipulated variable (what you are changing) • Responding variable (what you are calculating. Hint! Look at the bottom of the example data table on page 85) • At least two controlled variables (they stay the same)

  11. DataTable • Make a data table like the one on page 85. • Be sure to have enough room for FOUR samples. • Label each column and remember the units! • Give your data table a name.

  12. Wednesday, September 19st Entry Task DO NOT TOUCH THE LAB SET UPS OR ANY LAB MATERIALS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at the set ups around the room. Draw a picture of this set up and label the different parts. Do this in your notebook Schedule: • Energy Conversion lab Homework: • Create a graph to represent the data collected today Objective: I can perform an experiment to compare the amount of stored energy in different foods • Please have on your desk • Lab write up from the last two days

  13. Thursday, September 20nd Entry Task Compare the graph that you made with your neighbor. Look at how to write a lab report worksheet to see if anything is missing. Schedule: • Energy Conversion Lab finish up Homework: • Final Lab Report Due Tomorrow • Objective: • I can understand how to analyze data showing how much stored energy is in different foods • Please have on your desk • Graph (so far) for lab

DO • Complete Graph • Complete conclusion by tomorrow • Follow all bullets from how to write a 9th grade lab report worksheet!!!!! • You will not get a formal lab report worksheet unless conclusion is finished and checked off by me either today or tomorrow • Copy onto the lab report worksheet, if you get one • Formal lab report worksheet due completed Monday!

  15. Friday, September 21st Entry Task 1. Give your lab write up to the person behind you. (if you are in the back row give it to the person in the front row) 2. Correct the lab report that was given to you. Use the “How to write an 8th grade lab report” worksheet to grade them accurately. 3. Focus on circling or highlighting corrections, not giving a grade Schedule: • Chapter 3 review Objective I can understand that energy has different forms, but it is always conserved • Homework: • Chapter 3 review • Chapter 3 test MONDAY • Final Lab Report Due MONDAY • Please Have on Desk: • Conclusion
