1. Chandler Online Academy: Overview and Information 2012/2013 School Year

2. Who can take online classes with COA? Any student in the state of Arizona, between the ages of 12 and 22, can take classes with Chandler Online Academy. Students can enroll in one of our programs: 1. Full-time-Student takes all classes online with COA 2. Concurrent-Student takes part (1-5 classes) of their full schedule of classes online with COA while taking the remainder of classes at a brick & mortar school 3. Part-time-Student pays for an online class from COA that they take in addition to their full schedule of classes at another school **Enrollment is continuous: Students can enroll any day between July – April 19th ***COA Students take classes 100% from home and must have a computer with high speed internet access.

Why do students enroll in Chandler Online Academy? • Physical health impairment: i.e. migraines, surgery, ulcers • Extracurricular pursuits: i.e. gymnastics, golf, musical • Social challenges: i.e. social anxiety, negative peer influence/bullying, difficulty focusing when surrounded by peers • Living situation: i.e. moving in/out-of-district mid-semester, extended time out-of-state/country, traveling with family • Teen pregnancy/parenthood • They just want to: students do not have to have a reason to enroll in Chandler Online Academy. They can if they want to!

Who is a good candidate for online learning? • Students who have intrinsic motivation to learn and complete requirements for high school. • Students who are autonomous and will advocate for themselves (communicate through phone and email) to get help if they need it. • Students who learn well through primarily text and some image-based instructional methodologies. • Students who have support at home. • Students who are on-level in skills for their grade-level. • Students who need to spend more time on lessons/practice than is allowed when a teacher is providing instruction. • Students who can focus and work independently in their home environment.

5. Who is usually not a good candidate for online learning? • Students who are significantly deficient in basic reading, writing, and/or math skills. • Students who need 1-1 guidance and support. • Students who are primarily auditory or kinesthetic learners. • Students who are not motivated to learn or complete class work. • Students who thrive on social interactions and are motivated by relationships with people.

6. e-Learning Features and Support for Online Students • Due dates for all assignments and assessments help students stay on pace each day and each week. These also help parents monitor student progress. • Tailored and specific teacher feedback to submitted work • Periodic interaction with teachers • Students can review all lessons and assignments/tests at any time • Parents can easily track student progress any time of day or night using the parent portal

7. With COA… Courses taught by CUSD teachers Curriculum is aligned to standards and the level of rigor is sufficient to prepare students to be successful in the next class/level of study Students have due dates each week and they are held accountable to complete their course within a reasonable time frame. Our software is easy to navigate and very user-friendly Each Full-time and Concurrent student receives an orientation so that I can show them how to navigate the system, how to contact their teacher, and be sure they understand expectations. $160 includes teacher contact and support. Students who need it may schedule 1-1 tutoring in-person, online, or by phone. Why should I refer my student who needs one or more online classes to COA?

Last Year… 327 online course enrollments (including summer) 216 courses successfully completed (66%) 63 Full-time students 20 Concurrent students 37 Part-time students 61 Summer students This Year (so far)… 415 online course enrollments 107 courses successfully completed as of November 14 (many are still working or just started classes) 78 Full-time students have enrolled so far this semester 59 Concurrent students have taken, or are taking, one or more classes with COA: 30 Basha, 5 CHS, 10 Hamilton, 13 Perry, 1 PJHS 56 Part-time students have enrolled in one or more online classes: 2 ACP-Erie, 10 Basha, 1 CEC, 19 CHS, 1 COA, 9 Hamilton, 12 Perry, 1 SJHS, 1 Seton Just enrolled 5 more full-time students this week Students We’ve Supported Since We Opened in December 2011

9. Stay Informed and Monitor Your Students New “Counselor Information” page on our website. Request a “Mentor Account” and be set-up to view real-time information about any of your students taking online classes, including; grades, pace, progress, and more, any time you want to see it! Get your Mentor Account and Information about our school: • Go to our website by first going to the main CUSD website and then click the “Find a School” dropdown at the top. Find Chandler Online Academy. • Click the “Counselor Information” page under the “What’s New” tab. • Complete the quick and easy “Request a Mentor Account” form. • Receive your log-in information within 1 business day. • Return to the “Counselor Information” page any time you want to check your students’ progress and click “Mentor Account Log-in Page”
