  1. Free Throw Mechanics/Positioning Lead Center Trail

  2. At Lead……. • While partner is reporting, line up players • Be ready to go when reporting is done • Be in the paint to get this done (about low block) • When reporting done, make eye contact w/partners • Verify number of shots with both partners • Look at free thrower, tell number of shots and bounce ball to him/her • Step OUT of paint about 4 feet off baseline by 4 feet off lane line extended • Stay out of paint till the ball falls through or is missed to make sure to cover players responsible for (low same side and all opposite side) • After free throw ends, repeat after checking for subs and making eye contact with partners • Chop clock on the made throw for the last free throw • Begin 5 second count when ball is at the disposal after made throw on last shot

  3. At Center…….. • While partner is reporting, line up players and be aware of those players NOT on the lane lines • Make sure the correct shooter is at the line • Be ready to go when reporting is done • May need to be closer to paint or closer to players OFF the lane line to assist • Make eye contact with both partners when reporting is done • Verify the number of shots with both partners • When ball is at the disposal of the shooter, C should be one step towards midcourt from the free throw line extended and just outside the three point arc • Count as normally would….horizontal at chest high, NOT a flick • Stay put on first of two or first two of three • Step down on the last free throw and chop clock when touched on rebound • Watch players responsible for (top two opposite)

  4. At Trail……. • Report foul accurately • Make eye contact with partners to verify number of free throws and shooter • Position yourself near the old ‘28 foot’ mark • Look for subs after first of two and second of three • Keep visual on any players behind the arc • If players in the back court, turn body to get a good angle to see them w/o looking directly at them • Step down on the last free throw • May have questions from coaches to handle, but do not let this distract you • Continue eye contact with partners
