  2. -ER & -IR Verbs • As we saw in the previous presentation, there are three conjugations of verbs in Spanish: –AR, –ER, and –IR. • -ER and –IR verbs are often studied together because all of their endings (except one) are identical.

  3. BEBER • Let’s look at an example, the verb BEBER, which means “to drink.” It ends in –ER, so it is included in this class.

  4. BEBER • The verb can be split into two parts: • The base: BEB- • The infinitive ending: -ER

  5. -er verbs - vocabulary • Aprender (la leccion) • Comprender • Comer (un sándwich/hamburguesa/fruta/ensaladas) • Beber (agua o jugo) • Leer (las tiras cómicas el periódico, la revista) • Correr (en el parque, por la playa) • To learn • To understand • To eat • To drink • To read (comics in the newspaper) • To run

  7. -ER endings – present tense conjugation • The endings for regular -ER verbs are the same as for –AR verbs, except that the vowel is –E- instead of –A-! • yo -o • tú -es • él, ella, Ud. -e • nosotros -emos • ellos -en • ustedes –en

  8. Conjugation of verbs for –er present tense: • Remember: to conjugate a verb there are 2 parts: drop the infinitive and add the ending for each pronoun to the stem: ex: comer = to eat stem = com Yo como nosotros comemos Tu comes el/ella come ellos/ellas comen Ud. come Uds. comen

  11. Stating what you do during a typical week: Que’ haces tipicamente durante el dia? Yo aprendo mucho en mis clases. Que hace Josue’ por la manana? El corre en el parque. Hacen Uds. ejercicio juntos en la educacion fisica? Si, hacemos ejercicio juntos en clase por la tarde. Que hacen Raquel y Anita por la noche? A veces comen en un restaurante.

  12. ¿Cómo se dice en español? • I often answer questions in class. • She sells fruit at the market. • They don’t understand the teacher. • We always read the newspaper. • You (tu’) never drink juice. • You all eat in the cafeteria together.

  15. What about the –IR Verbs? • Well, take a look for yourself. Can you find the one difference? • beber vivir • bebo vivo • bebes vives • bebe vive • bebemos vivimos • beben viven

  16. That’s right! • The endings are identical except for the nosotros form: • beber: bebemos • vivir: vivimos

  17. -IR endings – present tense conjugation • The endings for regular -IR verbs are the same as for –ER verbs, except that the nosotros is –I- instead of –E-! • yo -o • tú -es • él, ella, Ud. -e • nosotros -imos • ellos -en • ustedes –en
