Recent figures in the energy sector energy consumption 1 054,7 PJ energy efficiency increase annual 3,5 to 4%. electricity consumption 33 677 GWh Dependence on energy imports 72,6%; energy imports of the country EURO 3 billion proportion of renewables in total energy consumption 3,6% proportion of renewable resources in power generation 0,84%

New motivations the utilization of renewables - NDP National Development Plan Environment and Infrastructure Operative Program • Increasing the use of the renewable energy resources • Infrastructure development of energy generation based on renewable energy resources; • Non-agricultural SMEs entry into the renewable energy market, • Establishment of capacities aimed at the supply and transformation of fuels required for producing renewable energy; • Energy generation investment projects, promotion of utilisation of renewable energy resources with a considerable installed capacity • Projects aimed at the residential utilisation of renewable energy resources. Increasing energy efficiency • Ø      Residential energy efficiency developments; • Ø      Municipal energy efficiency developments; • Ø      Business energy efficiency developments; • Ø      Energy efficiency developments of the transport sector.

New motivations the utilization of renewables – NEP-2 National Environmental Programme Climate Change Action Plan • Development and dissemination of renewable technologies • Alternative fuels (biodiesel, bio-alchohol) • Landfill gas • Fuel switch (i.e. from gas to biomass) • Solar, wind and geothermal energy sources • Introduce of preferable price for renewable generated electricity • Energy forests • Research and development, awareness rising • R&D in the renewables technologies • Information dissemination related to utilization of renewables

Existing barriers Wind Biomass Biofuels Landfill gas No proper strategies on biodiesel and bio-ethilene The oil industry is not interested No wind map available, Uncertainty in the environmental permitting Lack of experience Only 3-5 lignite-fired power station will remain after 2005 Conflict with the nature protection New deponia: EU’s Landfill Directive: diminish the organic compounds from the waste ! Existing deponia: uncertain methane flux
