  1. History of the U.S. Flag For many, the US Flag as we see it today stands as a symbol of liberty and freedom. However, few would know that this symbol of liberation and prosperity appeared more than two centuries ago and in a very different shape than how we see it today. The famous American flag as we see it today started when segments of colonies started to rebel against the establishment and wanted to create an identity for themselves. The very first indication of self-identification by a segment of colonies was as a set of red strips featuring a snake as a warning and a deterrent not to tread near the Continental Navy fleets that hoisted it on their masts. While in New England, a green pine tree was used with red, white and blue stripes on the ships coming from that part of the United States. It was taken as a symbol of liberation in New England. Evolution of the American Flag throughout history During mid to late 18th century the rebellious colonies started to use a Union Jack on the American flag symbols of red and white strips. There were a total of 13 sets of red and white stripes on that flag indicating the 13 rebellious colonies. Many believe that it was later in the same year when Betsy Ross, a seamstress in Philadelphia sewed what is considered to be the first ‘American Flag’ in history. It featured 13 white stars featured in a circle on a blue square which was then cornered by 13 set of red and white strips. This image was the very first in a series of iterations evolving into the American flag as we see it

  2. today. Each time a colony joined the United States such as joining of Indiana, Mississippi, Louisiana, Ohio, and Tennessee in the receiving the status of a ‘state’ in 1818. Eventually, all 50 states joined in to form the United States of America giving rise to the official flag as we see it today with 50 stars and 13 stripes representing the original 13 colonies that first declared independence from the kingdom of Great Britain. Importance of the US Flag The US Flag has seen many crests and troughs during its lifetime, it was the flag that was carried on the shoulders of the soldiers of wars who laid down everything for their country and held it up high standing on the ground. Buying US flags online Although there are a number of vendors selling the US flag online it is recommended that while purchasing from any online source you look for one that is Made in the USA (as it adds a more patriotic element to your national property).
