  3. St. George’s Cross • Carried by John Cabot in 1497 when he reached the east coast of Canada. • He was from Italy but sailed for England. • It is present in many provincial flags and arms.

  4. Fleur-de-Lis • Flown by the French when Canadian land was claimed for the King of France. • Was used until the Treaty of Paris in 1763 when Canada was ceded to England. • Reappeared in Quebec Coat of Arms in 1868. • Became Quebec’s provincial flag in 1948.

  6. Royal Union Flag (Union Jack) • Became the flag for the British Empire in 1708. • Has St. George’s Cross, St. Andrew’s Cross and the Scottish flag • Became the flag for British Canada in 1759.

  7. Canadian Red Ensign • Combined the Union Jack with the Canadian Shield of Arms • Variations of this were flown from 1870 to 1965.
