  2. What is Human Resources Management? • Human Resource Management includes the Hiring, Inspiring and Managing of personnel. • How does Human Relations Inspire employees ? • Why is it important to increase employees skill development?

What is Human Resources? • In economics human resources is the quantity and quality of human effort directed toward producing goods and services. • Hiring the wrong employee in a small firm has a more dynamic affect on the organization than say a large firm. Why? What’s the proportional affect in a small firm on the owner, the organization, and other employees and functions? • In a large corporation what’s meant by “built in slack”? • Its important to have a Job Description in writing so that all dimensions of the job are considered. What does this mean?

Written Job Descriptions-Why? • Having the Job Description in writing ensures that all elements of the job are considered and forces management to consider changes as the firm grows or technology changes. • Federal and State laws prohibit discrimination in the work place including hiring, dismissal, level of pay, or promotions based upon race, color, gender, religious beliefs or national origin which applies to all firms with more than 15 employees. There are state laws that cover discrimination in companies with less than 15 employees. • The following shouldn’t be visited during the interview process: Age, Race, Gender, Disability, National origin, and Religion or Creed.

  5. Drug Testing • What impact might the liberalization of Pot use have on Businesses requiring Drug Testing in Colorado or Washington?

Equity Theory • Equity Theory is the theory whereby we all judge how we are treated relative to how we see others being treated. • To address ET management can systematically review with employees 1. How they performed relative to objectives • 2. Defined objectives for the next year • 3. Plans for future employee growth through experience, training

Performance Reviews, Workers Compensation, Unemployment Compensation • Performance Reviews – Review by management of the employees goals and the outcome of those goals and the employees performance. • Workers Compensation –Laws designed so that employees who are injured or disabled while on the job are provided with some type of compensation. • Unemployment Compensation- Financial assistance for some period of time to those people who loose their jobs through no fault of their own provided in every state by law.- $$$ very by state.
