  1. Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Program Department of Chemical Engineering Dr. Abdallah Sofiane Berrouk Freshman Seminar Series 09 November 2013

  2. Chemistry Air Mathematics Oil and Natural Gas Coal Economics Minerals Energy Physics Biology What is Chemical Engineering? • An engineering discipline that combines chemistry, physics and mathematics to transform raw materials or energy into forms useful for mankind, economically and without compromising environment, safety, or finite resources. The transformation can be chemical, biological or physical depending on the process. Convert raw materials to useful products and improve the human environment

  3. What is a Chemical Engineer? • Like all engineers, chemical engineers use math, physics, and economics to solve technical problems. The difference between chemical engineers and other types of engineers is that they apply a knowledge of chemistry in addition to other engineering disciplines. Chemical engineers sometimes are called 'universal engineers' because their scientific and technical mastery is so broad. • The chemical engineering program at the Petroleum Institute focuses on the training of oil-, gas- and petrochemical-oriented Chemical Engineer

  4. What do chemical engineers do? • We separate things that are mixed.Distillation, absorption, extraction, gravity separation, floatation etc. • We mix things that are separated.Stirred tanks, twins crew extruders, blenders, inline mixers etc. • We change things from one form to another.Reactors, CSTRs, Plug flow reactors, fluidized bed reactors etc.

  5. Where did they evolve from ? • We evolved from industrial chemists in early 1900s. • We evolved into chemical engineering scientists – 1950s • We embraced computers to analyze chemical processes – 1980s

  6. Can we be famous ? Notable Chemical Engineers in UAE: • H.E. Abdullah Nasser Al Suwaidi (ADNOC CEO) • H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber (MasdarCEO and minister of state) • Mr. MohamadSahooAl Suwaidi (Director of Gas Directorate in ADNOC and Former GASCO CEO) • Mr. AbdulazizAlhajri (Borouge CEO)

  7. Where Chemical Engineers can work? • Manufacturing • Pharmaceuticals • Healthcare • Design and construction • Pulp and paper • Petroleum production • Petroleum refining • Petrochemicals • Specialty chemicals • Food • Microelectronics • Polymers and advanced materials • IT • Biotechnology • Medicine • Law • Education Chemical Engineering is the most versatile discipline!

  8. If @ ADNOC? Manufacturing Gas separations (GASCO, ADGAS) Chemicals (BOROUGE, FERTIL) Refining (TAKREER) Exploration & Production Reservoir modeling and simulation (ADCO, ADMA) Process Engineering & Design all of the above

  9. What Chemical Engineers can work @ ADNOC ? • You will work as: • Process Engineer • Production Planning Engineer • Design Engineer • Operation Engineer • Environment Engineer • Corrosion Engineer • Polymer Engineer • Safety Engineer • Automation Engineer • Facility Engineer • Business & Marketing Specialist

  10. Department of Chemical Engineering at the Petroleum Institute

  12. Major Courses • Principles of Chemical Engineering • Computational Methods • Fluid Mechanics • Mass Transfer • Heat Transfer • Designed Experimentation • Kinetics and Reactor Design • Chemical Engineering Labs • Thermodynamics • Process Dynamics and Control • Engineering Economy • Petroleum Refining • Summer Internship • Senior design • Electives (Polymer, Nanotechnology, Combustion, Corrosion, Separation, Catalysis)

  13. Relationship with other Engineering Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics Fluid Mechanics Electro-chemistry Process control Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Oil Production Fluid Mechanics Petroleum Engineering

  14. Research in Chemical Engineering

  15. Student Association/Activities • American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AIChE) • The world's leading organization for chemical engineering professionals, with over 40,000 members from over 90 countries • The PI AIChE student chapter was launched in spring 2009 • The aim of this student chapter at the PI is to involve our students with other chemical engineering students from various institutions in the world through conferences and forums

  16. AIChE Activities • Several events and trips are organized with the aim to get PI chemical engineering students from all levels to interact and share their experiences at the PI. *Bowling *Seminars from Industry *Barbeque *Poster Competition *Industrial Trips *Movies *Honor Day
