The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since. One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours! Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped. Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on. In the torchlight, he caught

'I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill.' I've been coming up here night after night for weeks now. You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise.' 'You certainly did give me a surprise!' said the vicar. 'You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.'

  15. Language Points 'That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill. 'It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.' 'We'll get used to that Bill,' said the vicar. 'Thirteen is not as good as one but it's better than nothing. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.'

  22. Language Points 4.Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped. before:...才 -- Nearly a week passed before she could explain what had happened to her. 过去快一个星期了,她才解释所发生的事。

  27. Language Points 9.You certainly did give me a surprise! 肯定句中常用助动词do, did, does加强语气和情感彩,一定要位于动词原形之前。 文中在did之前,还用了副词certainly,意思是"的确",进一步加强了语气。 e.g. You do look beautiful today.  你今天看起来真漂亮。

  28. Language Points 10.'You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well. as well用在句尾相当于too, 主要用于肯定句中, 但比too 所表达的语意更优秀。 -- You looked nice yesterday and you look beautiful as well today. 11.Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.' still用于句首, 用逗号分隔开来, 表达一个转折的关系: 虽然如此, 但是。

  29. Language Points 12. " …there's nothing I can do about it." There's nothing I can do about it= There is nothing I can do about it = I am at a lose what to do(at a loss adv.困惑) 对此我无能为力了。

  30. Language Points 13.‘We'll get used to that, Bill,’ said the vicar. get used to / be used to /be accustomed to / get accustomed to 都表示习惯于。get强调渐近的过程, be强调习惯了的状态。 -- You will get used to the cold weather here. 你很快会适应这寒冷的天气的。 -- You will get used to jogging day after day. 你会习惯每天跑步的。
